All times are local. The race time is the scheduled start; weather delays and interruptions are described below.

Championship background

Clay Regazzoni arrived at round 3 leading the 1974 F1 World Championship on 10 points, with Emerson Fittipaldi on 9. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 18 points.

Race entries

Shadow withdrew after Revson was killed in testing. Lotus introduced its new 76, with Peterson initially using the experimental electric clutch while Ickx preferred conventional controls. Hunt gave Hesketh’s own car its championship debut, Beltoise introduced BRM’s P201 and Brambilla joined March. Local entries included Charlton, Keizan, Ian Scheckter and Paddy Driver; Belsø joined Merzario at Williams.

Wednesday practice — postponed

The intended opening day was abandoned because marshals were delayed and safety work at Barbecue Bend was incomplete. A severe afternoon thunderstorm reinforced the decision. The official practice programme moved to Thursday and Friday before Saturday’s race, replacing Kyalami’s planned rest day.

Thursday first timed practice

Pace initially appeared fastest for Surtees, but a recheck of the time sheets put Lauda narrowly ahead. Lotus encountered repeated difficulties with Peterson’s new car, including a starter problem that also affected the electric clutch system. He used the older 72 while the mechanics worked, whereas Ickx initially enjoyed a more straightforward introduction to the new design.

Thursday second timed practice

Peterson continued switching between cars as oil leaks and pressure concerns interrupted his running. Belsø was stranded by electrical trouble, while Brambilla damaged a nose during his first championship meeting. Fittipaldi remained dissatisfied with McLaren’s handling, and Hunt’s team investigated poor straight-line speed and suspected fuel-system trouble in the new Hesketh.

Friday first timed practice

Higher temperatures made quick laps harder to achieve. Both new Lotuses developed misfires, and Peterson’s electric clutch had been disconnected. Hesketh revised its rear-wing setting and discovered that fuel vaporisation, rather than the engine itself, explained part of its difficulty. The less experienced local runners also had to overcome a lengthy interruption to domestic racing caused by fuel restrictions.

Friday final qualifying

Lauda retained pole beside Pace. Merzario produced an outstanding lap to claim third, ahead of Reutemann and Regazzoni. Stuck also impressed, qualifying seventh in the March. Peterson chose to persist with the new Lotus despite having recorded a better time in the older car, while Belsø’s disrupted preparation left him at the rear.

Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Saturday warm-up

The unofficial morning session gave the teams a final chance to assess race settings. Changes to Pace’s Surtees proved unhelpful, leaving him unhappy with its balance for the Grand Prix. Before the start, the field also completed a formation lap without an official pace car, with instructions to maintain order.

What happened in the 1974 South African Grand Prix?

Lauda led initially, with Reutemann close behind. Further back, Peterson’s stuck throttle contributed to contact with Ickx, compromising both new Lotuses. Reutemann passed Lauda at the start of the tenth lap and established the lead, while Hunt’s promising challenge ended with a broken driveshaft.

Ferrari’s hopes weakened as the race developed. Regazzoni retired, and Lauda eventually stopped with ignition trouble. Beltoise advanced strongly in the new BRM, while Hailwood worked through the field in his McLaren. Mechanical problems and vibration also limited the challenges of Fittipaldi and Scheckter.

Reutemann completed the victory that had escaped him in Argentina. Beltoise’s second place became BRM’s final championship podium, with Hailwood third. Depailler, Stuck and Merzario completed the points, giving several teams a valuable return from a demanding meeting.

After the race, Clay Regazzoni headed the drivers’ standings with 10 points, followed by Carlos Reutemann on 9. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 22, with Ferrari on 12.
