Championship background

Emerson Fittipaldi arrived at round 6 leading the 1975 F1 World Championship on 21 points, with Carlos Pace on 16. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 26.5 points.

Race entries

Andretti missed the meeting to compete at Indianapolis. Brise joined Hill’s team alongside Migault, and quickly impressed in the new car. Zolder returned after the difficulties of its 1973 event, with a revised chicane before the pits and a surface better prepared for Formula One.

Friday morning timed practice

Lauda pushed hard from the start, while Brambilla and Brise also looked committed. A split titanium exhaust pipe forced Ferrari to revert to its earlier system. Donohue crashed the Penske and faced a lengthy repair, while several teams began to encounter the circuit’s demanding brake-cooling requirements.

Friday afternoon timed practice

Pace made effective use of Brabham’s spare to finish the day fastest ahead of Lauda, Fittipaldi and Scheckter. Pryce and Evans also changed cars after engine trouble. Migault joined the running when his new Hill was completed, but Donohue remained sidelined. The session exposed how little recovery time the brakes had between Zolder’s heavy stopping points.

Saturday morning timed practice

Fine drizzle made the circuit slippery without creating conditions suitable for sustained wet-tyre running. Brambilla and Migault found the lack of grip early, and most drivers stayed in the pits. Ickx completed some laps and Lauda made a cautious exploratory run. Engine failures had already delayed Peterson and Hunt, so the curtailed activity gave their teams time for repairs.

Saturday final qualifying

The circuit dried after lunch and the field returned to full-speed running. Lauda claimed pole, while Brambilla’s committed performance earned third overall behind Pace. Regazzoni and Pryce followed, and Brise qualified seventh ahead of Fittipaldi. Peterson returned with a fresh engine, but McLaren could not turn its set-up changes into a front-running time.

Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Sunday warm-up

Overcast but dry conditions allowed a half-hour of full-race-trim testing. Lauda chose the left side of the grid for pole, giving him the inside approach to the opening left-hander. The session offered a final opportunity to check the cars after a weekend in which brakes and engine changes had occupied several teams.

What happened in the 1975 Belgian Grand Prix?

Pace led at the start, but his initial advantage disappeared as he struggled with braking and tyre behaviour. Brambilla briefly took over before Lauda passed him and established control. Scheckter climbed to second, while early collisions eliminated Mass and Jones and delayed Watson.

Brambilla’s challenge faded through brake and tyre difficulties. Regazzoni stopped with a blistered tyre, Brise retired after a spin and engine trouble, and Hunt lost drive through a broken gear linkage. Lauda maintained a secure margin over Scheckter as Reutemann moved into third.

Lauda won comfortably, with Scheckter and Reutemann completing the podium. Depailler finished fourth, while Regazzoni recovered to fifth ahead of Pryce. Fittipaldi’s brake problems left him seventh and without points, allowing Lauda to take the championship lead.

After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 23 points, followed by Emerson Fittipaldi on 21. Brabham – Ford led the constructors’ table on 29, with McLaren – Ford on 26.5.
