Roelof Wunderink, born on 12 December 1948, progressed quickly through Dutch racing before a short Formula One spell with Ensign. He began in Simca competition in 1970 and won the Dutch Formula Ford title in 1972, supported by HB Alarms. Formula Three followed in 1973 and Formula 5000 in 1974.
His first World Championship entry came at the Spanish Grand Prix on 27 April 1975. Six entries produced three starts in Ensign’s older car, but his season was also interrupted by injuries from a Formula 5000 testing accident.
Two of his Grand Prix starts ended with mechanical trouble. In Austria he reached the finish after a tyre change, four laps behind, but was not classified. No championship points followed.
Wunderink withdrew from top-level racing at the end of 1975 and moved into property. His rapid rise through the junior categories had reached F1, but the combination of injury and limited machinery left little opportunity to establish himself there.
