Championship background
Niki Lauda arrived at round 14 leading the 1975 F1 World Championship on 55.5 points, with Emerson Fittipaldi on 39. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 63.5 points.
Race entries
Penske returned after Donohue’s death, employing Watson to drive its new PC3. Leclère made his championship debut in a third Tyrrell, Lombardi moved to Williams and Wunderink replaced the injured Amon at Ensign. BRM and Surtees were absent. A new chicane changed the approach to the esses, while the cancelled Canadian race generated a separate dispute over prize money.
Friday morning timed practice
Lauda set the pace as the field learned the new chicane. Jarier initially showed encouraging speed in the Matra-powered Shadow, but its projected fuel consumption prompted a switch back to the Cosworth car. Pace damaged his Brabham over the chicane kerbs after an encounter with team-mate Reutemann. The revised section immediately placed additional demands on drivers and machinery.
Friday afternoon timed practice
Lauda continued to lead the times after changing to Ferrari’s spare. Brambilla’s fast Friday performance ended in a heavy crash across the chicane, leaving March facing an extensive rebuild. Hunt compared Hesketh’s older car with the 308C, while Lotus struggled with the kerbs and a lack of competitive pace.
Saturday morning timed practice
Fittipaldi briefly threatened the leading time, but Lauda answered in Ferrari’s spare. Brambilla borrowed Stuck’s March while mechanics rebuilt his damaged car with help from a nearby aircraft engineering facility. Hunt concentrated on the newer Hesketh without finding the pace he wanted. The Tyrrell drivers continued to improve as they adapted to the revised circuit.
Saturday final qualifying
Lauda returned to his usual car and secured pole ahead of Fittipaldi. Reutemann’s late improvement put him third, followed by Jarier and Andretti. Watson’s misfire prevented further progress in the new Penske. Regazzoni could not approach Lauda’s pace even after trying the same spare Ferrari, leaving him ninth on the grid.

Sunday warm-up
Pace encountered engine concerns and Brise preferred Hill’s older car after comparing the available engines. Watson’s continuing misfire eventually forced Penske to prepare its older display car for the race. Neither Williams started: Lombardi suffered an electrical problem, while Laffite accidentally put visor-cleaning fluid into his eyes. Lombardi could not fit comfortably into his car as a substitute.
What happened in the 1975 United States Grand Prix?
Lauda led Fittipaldi away and the pair established themselves at the front. Reutemann retired with engine failure and Andretti lost his Parnelli to suspension trouble. Regazzoni damaged his nose against Mass’s McLaren and fell behind after stopping for repairs.
When the leaders reached Regazzoni, he let Lauda through but delayed Fittipaldi for several laps. Officials called him in after blue flags were ignored, and Ferrari subsequently withdrew him. Fittipaldi resumed his pursuit with a much larger deficit, while Mass advanced in the contest for third.
Lauda won by just under five seconds, with Fittipaldi confirming second in the championship. Mass held third, and Hunt reclaimed fourth from Peterson on the final lap; Scheckter finished sixth. This was also the final race for Hill’s team: Graham Hill, Brise and four team colleagues died in an aircraft accident later that year.
After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 64.5 points, followed by Emerson Fittipaldi on 45. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 72.5, with Brabham – Ford on 54.
