Joseph Vonlanthen is a former Swiss racing driver whose path to Formula One was anything but ordinary. Although his time on the world stage was brief, he remains part of an exclusive club of drivers to have competed in a Formula One World Championship Grand Prix.
Vonlanthen began his career in Formula Vee, sharpening his racecraft in the fiercely competitive junior ranks before stepping up to Formula Three. It was there that he truly made his mark, claiming the Swiss Formula 3 Championship and establishing himself as one of Switzerland’s standout talents of the era.
A move into Formula Two proved more challenging, with stronger competition and fewer opportunities to shine, but Vonlanthen’s persistence earned him a chance few drivers ever receive. In 1975, he secured a drive with Frank Williams’ team for the non-championship Swiss Grand Prix, piloting a Frank Williams Racing Cars to a 14th-place finish.
That appearance opened the door to Formula One World Championship competition later the same year. On 17 August 1975, Vonlanthen lined up for the Austrian Grand Prix in a Williams FW04, officially making his F1 debut. His opportunity came under unusual circumstances: he was only added to the starting field after Wilson Fittipaldi was injured during practice and unable to take his place on the grid. Vonlanthen seized the chance, but his race ended prematurely with engine failure, leaving him without championship points.
Following his brief spell in Formula One, Vonlanthen returned to Formula Two before gradually stepping away from the sport’s top tiers. While his time in F1 lasted only a single World Championship start, his journey from Formula Vee champion hopeful to Grand Prix driver remains a memorable chapter in Swiss motorsport history.
