Percival Guy Tunmer was a South African driver best known for his Formula Atlantic drives and a single appearance in Formula One at his home race in 1975, piloting the iconic Lotus 72 for South Africa’s famed privateer outfit, Team Gunston. Against a fiercely competitive field, he brought the car home in 11th place, narrowly missing out on championship points.
While Formula One gave Tunmer his moment in the international spotlight, it was in Formula Atlantic where he truly made his mark. Competing in one of the era’s most fiercely contested categories, he became a standout figure in South African motorsport circles throughout the 1970s and beyond.
Tragically, his story came to an untimely end on 22 June 1999, when he was killed in a motorcycle accident in his native South Africa.
