Championship background

Emerson Fittipaldi arrived at round 3 leading the 1975 F1 World Championship on 15 points, with Carlos Pace on 9. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 15 points.

Race entries

Ferrari introduced the 312T for Lauda and Regazzoni, while Pryce received a new Shadow DN5 and Brambilla debuted March’s 751. Lombardi drove the older March, qualifying for her first championship start. Evans replaced Wilds at BRM, and local entries included Ian Scheckter’s Tyrrell, Charlton’s McLaren and the Lotus cars of Keizan and debutant Tunmer.

Wednesday first timed practice

Lauda showed immediate promise in Ferrari’s new car, but Graham Hill’s accident badly damaged his Lola and ended his participation. Peterson again struggled with braking problems in the Lotus. The interruptions gave the teams an early warning that the available practice time could be difficult to use effectively.

Wednesday second timed practice

Reutemann ended the day fastest, with Pace close behind in the other Brabham. Ian Scheckter produced an impressive lap in his privately entered Tyrrell. Shadow could not reproduce its South American form, both drivers reporting disappointing straight-line speed. Brambilla’s new March required repairs after an excursion into the catch fencing.

Thursday first timed practice

Fittipaldi’s engine failed and spread oil across Sunset Corner, sending Lauda’s following Ferrari into the fencing. Both drivers needed replacement cars while their mechanics assessed the damage. Peterson’s improved brakes were offset by an oil-system problem, and repeated stoppages placed increasing pressure on the remaining programme.

Thursday final qualifying

Pace secured pole ahead of Reutemann, giving Brabham the front row. Jody Scheckter reached third before crashing heavily and requiring the spare Tyrrell. Lauda’s earlier time kept him fourth. The interruptions left the meeting short of its allotted running, but a proposed extra Friday session was abandoned after mechanics objected to the growing repair workload. Lombardi qualified; Wilson Fittipaldi missed the grid.

Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Saturday warm-up

Scheckter’s preparations suffered another setback when the engine in his replacement Tyrrell began losing power during Saturday morning running. Metal traces in the oil prompted an urgent engine change. The home favourite therefore approached the start after a major effort by the team to recover from both practice damage and fresh mechanical trouble.

What happened in the 1975 South African Grand Prix?

Pace led initially, but Scheckter moved ahead early and Reutemann followed into second. Brake trouble limited Pace’s challenge, while Depailler advanced to third. Emerson Fittipaldi threatened the leading group before an ignition problem forced repeated stops and removed him from contention.

Scheckter resisted Reutemann throughout the race, with Depailler maintaining Tyrrell’s strong position. Hunt stopped with a throttle-related problem, Brambilla retired with a leaking oil cooler and Ian Scheckter crashed after an energetic recovery through the field.

The home favourite won by just over three seconds, followed by Reutemann and Depailler. Pace held fourth despite his brake difficulties, with Lauda and Mass completing the points. Regazzoni lost a likely score to late throttle trouble, leaving Ferrari’s new car with a useful but modest debut result.

After the race, Emerson Fittipaldi headed the drivers’ standings with 15 points, followed by Carlos Pace on 12. Brabham – Ford led the constructors’ table on 19, with McLaren – Ford on 16.
