Jochen Rindt delivered the Lotus 72’s first championship victory at Zandvoort, demonstrating the promise of its radical design. Jackie Stewart and Jacky Ickx completed the podium, but the result was overshadowed by the fatal accident that claimed Piers Courage’s life.

Championship background
Jack Brabham arrived at round 5 leading the 1970 F1 World Championship on 15 points, with Jackie Stewart on 13. March – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 19 points.
Race entries
Regazzoni made his championship debut for Ferrari and Cevert joined Tyrrell in place of the retired Servoz-Gavin. McLaren returned with Gurney and debutant Gethin while Hulme recovered from burns. Moser brought the new Bellasi, and Lotus committed to its revised 72s for Rindt and Miles.
Friday timed practice
Rindt immediately showed the revised Lotus’ pace, leading Stewart despite a spin caused by brake-pad trouble. Rodríguez crashed heavily after a puncture and switched to BRM’s spare. Amon lost running to a leaking fuel bag, while Ferrari’s fuel-pump problems complicated Regazzoni’s first championship weekend.
Saturday first timed practice
Mechanical failures affected Pescarolo, Siffert and Rindt, and Ferrari also investigated an oil leak. Courage spun into the sand while pressing to recover lost running. Ickx and Amon joined the quickest group, while crowded pit-lane conditions led to minor contact between Stewart’s March and Brabham’s car.
Saturday final qualifying
Sea mist arrived, but Rindt continued to improve and claimed pole with a smooth, decisive lap. Stewart pushed hard to take second and also guided Cevert, helping the newcomer improve. Regazzoni qualified impressively, while the guaranteed-place system protected seeded entrants: de Adamich, Stommelen, Lovely and Moser were the four excluded drivers after the times were resolved.

What happened in the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix?
Ickx led initially, but Rindt passed at Tarzan early in the race and established control. Stewart pursued in the March, while the second Lotus became part of a closely matched midfield group. The 72’s performance showed how far its development had progressed since its difficult debut.
Courage crashed fatally during the race. His death devastated the paddock and his close friend Rindt, and necessarily overshadows the sporting account. The race continued, with Rindt maintaining the lead while his rivals worked through traffic and their own mechanical difficulties.
Rindt won ahead of Stewart and Ickx, with debutant Regazzoni fourth and Beltoise fifth. Surtees took the final point after passing the brake-troubled Miles late on. Lotus had achieved an important technical breakthrough, but there was little cause for celebration after the loss of Courage.
After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 19 points, followed by Jochen Rindt on 18. March – Ford led the constructors’ table on 25, with Lotus – Ford on 23.
