Championship background
Jochen Rindt arrived at round 11 leading the 1970 F1 World Championship on 45 points, with Jackie Stewart on 25. Lotus – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 50 points.
Race entries
Team Lotus withdrew while mourning Rindt, although Hill raced Rob Walker’s Lotus 72. Stewart had both the new Tyrrell and his familiar March available, with Cevert continuing in the other March. Limited engine supplies delayed Peterson and Schenken’s preparations, while Ferrari arrived with Ickx and Regazzoni following its Monza victory.
Thursday timed practice
Ickx set the pace as several rivals struggled simply to get running. Hill awaited replacement brake shafts, Schenken’s De Tomaso lacked an engine and the works March drivers were initially absent. Eaton crashed his BRM, while a suspension failure sent Brabham off in Stommelen’s car. Stewart mainly used the March as the Tyrrell received another engine, and Regazzoni worked through brake trouble.
Friday timed practice
Ickx and Regazzoni were the only drivers below 1:32, but Ferrari still had fuel-pump overheating to address on the second car. Stewart alternated between March and Tyrrell while the team corrected the new car’s throttle action and a loosening wheel nut. Both Matras suffered engine failures. Hill, Peterson and Stommelen were able to resume running, but repairs and late assembly still occupied other garages.
Saturday final qualifying
A damp morning gave way to dry conditions for the final session. Hill suffered a fuel fire, Amon’s rear suspension failed and Ickx needed a cracked brake disc replaced. Stewart first matched Regazzoni in the March, then switched to the Tyrrell after the March lost a wheel bearing. On his final lap he produced a 1:31.5, taking pole from Ickx and choosing to race the new car despite its limited mileage.

Sunday test session
Hill’s clutch broke apart, damaging surrounding components, while Stommelen suffered a failure in the casting joining his gearbox to the engine. Both teams faced urgent repairs before the afternoon start. The optional half-hour session therefore exposed two substantial problems after an already demanding three days of preparation.
What happened in the 1970 Canadian Grand Prix?
Stewart made a superb start to the Tyrrell’s championship racing career, leading comfortably as Ickx headed the pursuit. The new car’s speed was clear, but its run ended with a front stub-axle failure. Ferrari inherited the lead and soon held the first two places.
Ickx controlled the remainder of the race, with Regazzoni following him home and Amon taking third. Rodriguez, Surtees and Gethin completed the points. Cevert had shown strong pace before mechanical trouble ended his challenge, while Schenken brought the De Tomaso home well behind the leaders and outside the classified finishers.
Ferrari’s second consecutive one-two kept Ickx’s championship hopes alive, although he still needed to win both remaining races to pass Rindt. Tyrrell left without the result its performance deserved, but Stewart’s pole and commanding early lead showed that the new constructor could immediately challenge the established teams.
After the race, Jochen Rindt headed the drivers’ standings with 45 points, followed by Jacky Ickx on 28. Lotus – Ford led the constructors’ table on 50, with Ferrari on 43.
