Jochen Rindt snatched victory at Monaco when Jack Brabham slid into the barrier at the final corner of the final lap. The dramatic finish gave the Lotus 49 its last championship win, with Brabham recovering second and Henri Pescarolo earning his only Formula One podium.

Championship background
Jackie Stewart arrived at round 3 leading the 1970 F1 World Championship on 13 points, with Jack Brabham on 9. March – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 13 points.
Race entries
Peterson made his championship debut in a privately entered March. Lotus reverted to its older 49C cars while developing the 72, and Ickx returned after his Spanish burns. Ten seeded drivers were guaranteed places, leaving the other entrants to compete for six remaining starts.
Thursday timed practice
Stewart and Amon established March at the front as dust cleared from the street circuit. Lotus was less satisfied with its older cars, although the newer 72 remained available as a spare. Siffert suffered engine trouble and Oliver lost running to gearbox problems, leaving BRM near the bottom of the order.
Friday timed practice
Heavy rain made the session unrepresentative for the grid. Stewart remained comfortably fastest among those running, while Hill and McLaren both struck the edges of the circuit. Teams gained wet-weather experience, but there was little incentive to risk damage chasing times far slower than Thursday’s laps.
Saturday general qualifying
Stewart improved to secure pole, while Ickx and Brabham disputed positions behind the leading Marches. Hill crashed heavily enough to put his car out of action, and Servoz-Gavin also damaged his March. BRM tried a different ignition system but remained short of the leaders’ pace.
Saturday non-seeded qualifying
The non-seeded drivers had a final opportunity to earn a start, although these laps could not improve their grid positions. Siffert and Courage excelled. Pescarolo’s earlier time kept him in despite fuel trouble, while Servoz-Gavin failed to qualify in the spare March. Hill was then allowed to take over Miles’ non-qualifying Lotus, but had to start at the back because he had not practised in it.

What happened in the 1970 Monaco Grand Prix?
Stewart led initially, with Amon and Brabham in pursuit. Brabham passed Amon before Stewart’s misfire forced him into the pits, handing the lead to the Australian. Ickx and Beltoise retired, and Hulme’s gearbox trouble allowed Rindt and Pescarolo to move ahead.
Amon’s suspension failure left Rindt second, nine seconds behind Brabham. The Lotus driver began an extraordinary late charge, setting fastest lap as he reduced the gap. Brabham still reached the final lap in front but came under increasing pressure through traffic.
At the last corner Brabham took a defensive line, locked his wheels on the dusty surface and slid into the barrier. Rindt swept past to win, while Brabham reversed out and salvaged second. Pescarolo, Hulme, Hill and Rodríguez completed the points after one of Monaco’s most memorable finishes.
After the race, Jack Brabham headed the drivers’ standings with 15 points, followed by Jackie Stewart on 13. Brabham – Ford led the constructors’ table on 15, with McLaren – Ford on 15.
