Jochen Rindt made it four wins in a row after a close contest with Jacky Ickx at Hockenheim. Ferrari supplied a serious challenge, but the Lotus 72 had just enough speed to prevail by seven-tenths of a second, with Denny Hulme completing the podium.

Championship background
Jochen Rindt arrived at round 8 leading the 1970 F1 World Championship on 36 points, with Jack Brabham on 25. Lotus – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 41 points.
Race entries
The German Grand Prix moved to Hockenheim after the drivers demanded safety improvements at the Nürburgring. Ferrari paired Ickx with Regazzoni, Lotus brought a new 72 for Miles, and Fittipaldi continued in the older 49. Gethin joined Hulme at McLaren, while local entrant Hahne attempted to qualify a March.
Friday timed practice
Regazzoni established the first serious benchmark on a circuit new to the championship. His 1:59.8 suggested that the two-minute barrier would separate the front-runners from the rest. Ferrari had brought three cars, but engine and gearbox problems complicated its preparations. The long straights rewarded the twelve-cylinder cars and the efficient Lotus 72, giving the more conventional Cosworth-powered opposition a difficult target.
Saturday first timed practice
Rindt responded with a 1:59.7, moving the Lotus ahead of Regazzoni’s Friday time. With no previous Formula One race at Hockenheim to provide a direct comparison, each improvement helped define the new circuit’s competitive level. Ferrari remained the principal threat, while Stewart’s March was unable to join the fight for the front row.
Saturday final qualifying
Ickx improved to 1:59.5 to claim pole ahead of Rindt and Regazzoni. They were the only three drivers below two minutes. Siffert was credited with 2:00.0, although contemporary observers questioned that timing. Stewart qualified seventh, and Hahne missed the race. Ferrari’s speed set up the prospect of another close contest with the championship-leading Lotus.

What happened in the 1970 German Grand Prix?
Ickx and Rindt exchanged the lead as the race developed into a high-speed contest. Regazzoni joined the battle and briefly led himself, underlining Ferrari’s strength. A gearbox problem then caused him to spin out, leaving his team-mate to carry the challenge.
Rindt was able to use the Lotus’s straight-line speed to answer Ickx’s attacks. Their duel continued to the finish, where the Austrian won by just 0.7 seconds. Hulme took third, while Fittipaldi drove steadily through the attrition to finish fourth ahead of Pescarolo and Stommelen.
Stewart’s difficult weekend ended with engine trouble after an earlier gear-selection problem had sent him beyond one of the chicanes. Rindt’s fourth consecutive victory with the Lotus 72 strengthened his championship lead. It would also prove to be the final victory of his career.
After the race, Jochen Rindt headed the drivers’ standings with 45 points, followed by Jack Brabham on 25. Lotus – Ford led the constructors’ table on 50, with March – Ford on 33.
