Peter David de Klerk (16 March 1935 – 11 July 2015) was one of South Africa’s most innovative and determined racing drivers, remembered not only for competing in Formula One but also for designing and building his own Grand Prix car. At a time when most drivers relied on established manufacturers, de Klerk took a different path, combining engineering talent with driving skill to create a unique place for himself in motorsport history.

Born in South Africa, de Klerk emerged as a leading figure in the country’s flourishing Formula One scene during the early 1960s. His greatest achievement away from the cockpit came in 1962 when he designed and built a bespoke single-seater racing car specifically for the South African Formula One Championship. Known as the Alfa Special, the machine was powered by a 1.5-litre Alfa Romeo Giulietta straight-four engine and represented a remarkable feat of private engineering ambition.

The Alfa Special quickly became one of the most distinctive cars on the South African grid. Compact, lightweight and purpose-built for local competition, it showcased de Klerk’s determination to compete against better-funded rivals on his own terms. The car proved competitive in domestic events and became closely associated with his racing career.

De Klerk made his Formula One World Championship debut at the 1963 South African Grand Prix on 28 December, driving the Alfa Special he had created himself. Although the race ended in retirement, simply qualifying and competing against the world’s leading teams was a significant achievement for a privately built machine. Two years later, he returned to the World Championship event at Kyalami, guiding the Alfa Special to a 10th-place finish in the 1965 South African Grand Prix.

Across his Formula One World Championship career, de Klerk entered four Grands Prix. While he did not score championship points, his appearances reflected the spirit of an era when independent racers could still challenge the sport’s established constructors through ingenuity and determination.

The Alfa Special itself enjoyed a successful life beyond World Championship competition. It appeared in five non-championship Formula One races and achieved its finest result at the 1963 Rand Grand Prix, where it secured a podium finish against strong opposition. The car became one of the most successful locally built Formula One machines in South African racing history and remains a symbol of the country’s engineering creativity during the period.

As South African motorsport evolved, de Klerk eventually moved on to more modern machinery, including the Brabham BT20. Yet it is the Alfa Special that remains his defining legacy—a car conceived, designed and raced by the same man. Few drivers in Formula One history can claim to have competed at the highest level in a machine they built themselves.

Peter de Klerk passed away on 11 July 2015, but his contribution to motorsport continues to be celebrated. Driver, engineer, constructor and innovator, he embodied a pioneering spirit that made him one of the most distinctive figures in South African racing history.
