Championship background

Emerson Fittipaldi arrived at round 4 leading the 1975 F1 World Championship on 15 points, with Carlos Pace on 12. Brabham – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 19 points.

Race entries

Brise replaced Laffite at Williams for his championship debut, while Jones made his first start in a privately entered Hesketh. Wunderink joined Ensign, and Migault partnered Stommelen in Hill’s team. The meeting’s sporting preparations were overshadowed by serious concerns over inadequately secured barriers around the park circuit.

Friday opening practice — postponed

Drivers inspecting the circuit found missing or loose bolts and poorly secured sections of barrier. Most refused to practise until the installation was repaired. Their meeting continued while the teams waited, and the intended opening session did not proceed on schedule. The disagreement concerned the standard of the safety work, not simply a preference for a different type of circuit.

Friday delayed timed practice

Ickx eventually completed a series of cautious laps, later joined by Brambilla. Most of the field remained out of the cars, and only those two drivers recorded times. Work on the barriers continued into the evening, but the limited repairs did not resolve the drivers’ objections before the next day’s programme.

Saturday opening practice

Team personnel joined the effort to secure the barriers, with mechanics and managers working around the circuit. Ickx, Evans and Wunderink ventured out while most drivers continued their discussions. Threatened legal action and the possibility of the cars being impounded increased the pressure to participate, despite continuing reservations about the safety arrangements.

Saturday final qualifying

Most drivers finally joined the running, and Lauda took pole ahead of Regazzoni. Hunt and Andretti filled the second row. Depailler crashed and switched to Tyrrell’s spare after the damaged car was recovered. Emerson Fittipaldi completed only slow laps in protest and subsequently withdrew, refusing to accept that the circuit was adequately protected.

Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

What happened in the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix?

Contact at the first corner eliminated Lauda and delayed Regazzoni, leaving Hunt ahead of Andretti. Wilson Fittipaldi and Merzario stopped in protest. Oil from Scheckter’s failed engine contributed to further accidents, and Hunt crashed out. Andretti then led until suspension damage ended his race, promoting Stommelen ahead of Pace.

Stommelen’s rear wing failed and his Hill struck the barriers before entering an area occupied by people beside the track. Four people were killed and Stommelen was seriously injured. Pace crashed while avoiding the accident. The race continued for several more laps before officials finally stopped it.

Mass had passed Ickx and was declared the winner at 29 laps, with half points awarded because the required proportion of the scheduled distance had not been completed. Jarier’s penalty for passing under yellow flags promoted Reutemann to third. Lombardi finished sixth and received half a point, a historic achievement within a weekend remembered above all for its loss of life.

After the race, Emerson Fittipaldi headed the drivers’ standings with 15 points, followed by Carlos Pace on 12. Brabham – Ford led the constructors’ table on 21, with McLaren – Ford on 20.5.
