Championship background

Niki Lauda arrived at round 7 leading the 1975 F1 World Championship on 23 points, with Emerson Fittipaldi on 21. Brabham – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 29 points.

Race entries

Williams changed both drivers: Magee replaced Merzario and Ian Scheckter stood in for Laffite, who had a Formula Two commitment. Schuppan joined Brise at Hill, replacing Migault. Palm returned in a Hesketh for his home race, and Andretti rejoined the field after Indianapolis. All 26 entrants were allowed to start.

Friday morning timed practice

Reutemann set the pace ahead of Lauda as teams tried to find a balanced set-up for Anderstorp’s similar, banked corners. Magee stopped with jammed throttles, while Jones suffered the opposite problem and crashed when his Hesketh’s throttles stuck open. Brise’s engine failed, forcing him into Schuppan’s car and relegating the Australian to the older Lola spare.

Friday afternoon timed practice

Brambilla briefly tried Lombardi’s March before returning to his own car and setting the time that would secure pole. Ferrari’s adjustments failed to produce an answer, and several leading teams struggled to reconcile their drivers’ handling complaints. Peterson damaged a nose and changed cars, adding to Lotus’s unsettled weekend.

Saturday morning timed practice

Cooler, overcast conditions did not bring faster times as the heavily used circuit offered less favourable running. Brise’s replacement engine developed valve trouble, triggering another exchange of Hill’s cars. Palm damaged his Hesketh against the wall near the pits. Reutemann’s Brabham required final-drive repairs, leaving him to use the spare for the remaining qualifying effort.

Saturday final qualifying

Brambilla completed only limited running and then watched his rivals attempt to beat Friday’s time. Depailler punctured an oil radiator on rough ground and his engine seized, causing an interruption. Jarier was fastest in the final session but could not take pole. Lauda qualified fifth, while Regazzoni started eleventh, leaving Ferrari with considerable work to do.

Sunday warm-up

The half-hour warm-up allowed Depailler to check a replacement engine and Lauda to try the gearbox fitted overnight. After two days of difficult set-up work, the teams could finally assess their intended race configurations. Hotter conditions returned for the afternoon’s 80-lap contest.

What happened in the 1975 Swedish Grand Prix?

Brambilla led initially before Reutemann took control. The March’s tyre and brake difficulties ended its challenge, while Jarier lost a strong position when his oil pressure fell. Hunt retired with a brake-pipe leak, and Lauda steadily advanced through the changing order.

Lauda’s harder tyres became increasingly effective as the race developed. He reached second, closed on Reutemann and passed the Brabham before pulling clear. Regazzoni also recovered strongly from his lowly starting position. Further back, Brise impressed in battles with more established drivers before a gearbox problem restricted him to fourth gear.

Lauda won ahead of Reutemann and Regazzoni, extending his championship lead. Andretti finished fourth and Donohue fifth. Brise held sixth for his first championship point and Hill’s first as a constructor, while Fittipaldi’s brake trouble left the reigning champion outside the points again.

After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 32 points, followed by Carlos Reutemann on 22. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 35, with Brabham – Ford on 33.
