Vittorio Brambilla took his only Formula One victory in the rain-shortened 1975 Austrian Grand Prix. Hunt and Pryce completed the podium, but the meeting was overshadowed by the warm-up accident that killed a marshal and fatally injured Mark Donohue.

Championship background
Niki Lauda arrived at round 12 leading the 1975 F1 World Championship on 51 points, with Carlos Reutemann on 34. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 54 points.
Race entries
Stommelen returned to Hill after his Spanish injuries, ending Jones’s temporary spell. Amon joined Ensign, Lunger made his championship debut in a Hesketh and Vonlanthen entered a Williams. Watson returned to Surtees and BRM reappeared. Jarier introduced Shadow’s Matra V12-powered DN7, adding another engine configuration to the field.
Friday morning timed practice
Lauda set the pace, but mechanical failures and accidents disrupted several teams. Reutemann broke a transmission and then lost oil pressure in the spare Brabham. Andretti and Brambilla also suffered engine trouble. Peterson damaged his Lotus against the barriers while avoiding another car, forcing the team to begin extensive repairs.
Friday afternoon timed practice
Lauda improved as the temperature fell, with Hunt moving into second overall. Andretti lost another engine, Regazzoni switched Ferraris after an engine failure and Evans stopped in the BRM. Pryce used a spare Shadow because of a fuel leak. Wilson Fittipaldi crashed after a suspension failure and injured his hand, ending his participation.
Saturday morning timed practice
Cool, damp conditions limited the pace despite extensive overnight repairs. Stuck was fastest, while Andretti suffered a third engine failure. Pace crashed when a rear stub axle broke, and Henton also damaged his Lotus. With the team’s spare suspension parts already used on Peterson’s repairs, Henton could not continue.
Saturday final qualifying
Rain arrived before the final session, preventing any challenge to Friday’s grid positions. After initial reluctance, drivers ventured out to learn the wet conditions, with Regazzoni setting the best reported time. Lauda retained pole for his home race alongside Hunt. The running would prove valuable preparation for the weather that returned on Sunday.

Sunday warm-up
Donohue’s March crashed heavily after a tyre failure at the fast first corner. A marshal was killed, and Donohue suffered head injuries from which he died two days later. The accident interrupted the session and delayed the supporting programme. Further mechanical problems troubled Brabham and Parnelli as the teams prepared for an increasingly unsettled afternoon.
What happened in the 1975 Austrian Grand Prix?
Lauda led the delayed wet start, with Hunt and Depailler following. Brambilla moved rapidly through the spray and challenged the leaders as Lauda struggled to maintain his early pace. Hunt took the lead, but his Hesketh was running on seven cylinders and could not withstand the March’s attack.
Brambilla passed Hunt while they negotiated traffic and built a commanding advantage. Peterson needed a stop after visor trouble, and Mass spun out of a strong position. As the rain intensified, officials brought the race to an end with the result declared after 29 laps.
Brambilla spun and damaged his nose immediately after taking the flag, but his victory stood. Hunt finished second and Pryce third, followed by Mass, Peterson and Lauda. Half points were awarded for the shortened distance. Lauda’s half-point for sixth increased his championship lead slightly because neither Reutemann nor Fittipaldi scored.
After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 51.5 points, followed by Carlos Reutemann on 34. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 54.5, with Brabham – Ford on 51.
