Carlos Pace claimed his only Formula One victory in the 1975 Brazilian Grand Prix, leading Emerson Fittipaldi home for a Brazilian one-two at Interlagos. Jarier again dominated qualifying and much of the race before mechanical trouble denied Shadow its breakthrough.

Championship background
Emerson Fittipaldi arrived at round 2 leading the 1975 F1 World Championship on 9 points, with James Hunt on 6. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 9 points.
Race entries
Parnelli switched Andretti to Goodyear, bringing the entire field onto the same tyre supplier. Wilson Fittipaldi’s team built a replacement car after its Argentine accident, revising the cooling layout and strengthening suspension components. Peterson remained with Lotus despite renewed discussions with Shadow, while both Lotus cars received altered rear suspension in an effort to improve their handling.
Friday first timed practice
Jarier immediately set an imposing pace, with Reutemann his closest challenger. Emerson Fittipaldi was delayed by a cracked fuel pump. The Shadow’s speed prompted scrutiny of its engine installation, but its advantage was also evident through the fast corners. The other teams faced a demanding task on Interlagos’s long, bumpy lap.
Friday second timed practice
After a half-hour break, Jarier improved again. Lauda preferred Ferrari’s spare to his newer car, which suffered from severe oversteer, while Hunt spun the spare Hesketh and damaged its nose. Lotus’s suspension changes brought understeer rather than a cure, and Peterson also struggled with braking and engine trouble. Wilds damaged his BRM in an accident and hurt his wrist.
Saturday first timed practice
With a fresh engine, Jarier broke the previous qualifying benchmark and tightened his grip on pole. Lauda returned to his newer Ferrari with the spare car’s settings transferred across. Andretti’s troubled weekend included repeated engine changes, while the Brabhams and Ferraris fought over the places behind the leading Shadow.
Saturday final qualifying
Emerson Fittipaldi produced the session’s fastest lap to secure the other front-row position, although Jarier’s earlier time remained out of reach. Shadow ended the session with an engine failure. Stommelen, troubled by a misfire, shared Hill’s Lola and recorded his best time in it. Reutemann qualified third ahead of Lauda and Regazzoni.

Sunday warm-up
An oil leak during the unofficial morning running forced Ferrari to change Lauda’s engine before the race. In the heat, the teams faced careful preparation for a physically demanding afternoon. Track cleaning also delayed proceedings as the organisers tried to avoid the puncture problems of the previous year.
What happened in the 1975 Brazilian Grand Prix?
Reutemann took the lead at the start, but Jarier passed him and rapidly pulled away. Pace worked past his team-mate as Reutemann’s tyre choice upset the Brabham’s balance. Emerson Fittipaldi recovered from a poor getaway and began moving through the group behind the leading pair.
Jarier’s advantage began to shrink when his fuel system caused intermittent power loss. The Shadow then stopped with a seized fuel-metering control mechanism, handing Pace the lead. Fittipaldi passed Regazzoni and closed, but the remaining laps were insufficient to threaten his fellow Brazilian.
Pace won ahead of Fittipaldi and Mass, with Regazzoni, Lauda and Hunt completing the points positions. Wilson Fittipaldi finished thirteenth in the new Brazilian car despite exhaust problems. The home crowd celebrated a national one-two, while Shadow departed with another pole and another deeply frustrating retirement.
After the race, Emerson Fittipaldi headed the drivers’ standings with 15 points, followed by Carlos Pace on 9. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 15, with Brabham – Ford on 13.
