Championship background
Niki Lauda arrived at round 13 leading the 1975 F1 World Championship on 51.5 points, with Carlos Reutemann on 34. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 54.5 points.
Race entries
Merzario replaced the injured Wilson Fittipaldi, Zorzi made his championship debut with Williams and Crawford returned in Lotus’s second car. Surtees remained absent. Hunt had Hesketh’s new 308C available, while Ferrari arrived knowing that a modest points finish would be enough to settle Lauda’s title.
Friday morning timed practice
Lauda immediately established a substantial advantage. McLaren’s session unravelled through engine failures for both drivers, followed by Fittipaldi damaging the spare against the chicane barriers. The Brabham drivers spun while trying to approach Ferrari’s pace, and Depailler offered one of the stronger early challenges.
Friday afternoon timed practice
McLaren repaired the spare sufficiently for Fittipaldi to resume, and Mass returned after an engine change. Lauda improved again, with Regazzoni his nearest rival. Reutemann joined the next group but remained well short of the leading Ferrari. The home team’s speed drew an enthusiastic response from the crowd.
Saturday morning timed practice
Cooler, overcast conditions accompanied a more determined challenge from the opposition. Brise impressed while Hill exchanged cars between its drivers. Hunt compared Hesketh’s new design with the spare. Regazzoni lost oil pressure and Depailler suffered an engine failure, forcing both into replacement cars as the long straights continued to punish machinery.
Saturday final qualifying
Ferrari retained the front row, Lauda ahead of Regazzoni, who set his best time in the spare. Fittipaldi qualified third alongside Scheckter. Brise secured an excellent sixth, while Hunt improved without joining the leading rows. The opposition had narrowed the gap, but Ferrari still held a clear advantage in qualifying.

Sunday warm-up
An overnight thunderstorm left standing water around the circuit for the half-hour morning session. Cars encountered deep flooding, and officials considered abandoning the race if conditions failed to improve. Drainage work and a break in the weather eventually transformed the situation, allowing a nearly dry start after additional reconnaissance laps.
What happened in the 1975 Italian Grand Prix?
Regazzoni made the better start and led Lauda away. Brambilla’s clutch failed, and incidents through the chicanes eliminated or delayed several cars, including Andretti, Stommelen and Brise. Ferrari escaped the confusion and established a commanding one-two.
Fittipaldi passed Reutemann and steadily closed on Lauda. The Austrian had little reason to risk the championship in a defensive fight, and Fittipaldi took second late in the race. Regazzoni remained comfortably ahead, while Hunt and Pryce contested the lower points positions.
Regazzoni won, Fittipaldi finished second and Lauda took the third place that confirmed his first world title. Reutemann, Hunt and Pryce completed the points. Ferrari also secured the constructors’ championship, ending its long wait for both crowns; under the period’s rules, only Regazzoni’s result counted towards its constructor score at Monza.
After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 55.5 points, followed by Emerson Fittipaldi on 39. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 63.5, with Brabham – Ford on 54.
