Denny Hulme brought McLaren back to the winner’s circle in South Africa, overcoming overheating and a succession of strong challengers. Emerson Fittipaldi finished second, with Peter Revson completing a fine afternoon for McLaren on his first championship podium.

Championship background
Jackie Stewart arrived at round 2 leading the 1972 F1 World Championship on 9 points, with Denny Hulme on 6. Tyrrell – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 9 points.
Race entries
Mike Hailwood returned to Surtees and Jean-Pierre Beltoise rejoined BRM. Carlos Pace made his championship debut in a second Williams-entered March, while Rolf Stommelen drove the distinctive Eifelland. Local interest centred on Dave Charlton’s Lotus and the Gunston entries for John Love and William Ferguson.
Wednesday timed practice
Jackie Stewart laid down his marker almost immediately, setting 1:17.0 within the opening half-hour. It would remain the pole time throughout three afternoons of running. Revson and Pescarolo suffered early engine failures, Ganley broke a clutch and Pace lost time with a wheel-bearing problem. A striking time initially credited to Reutemann was subsequently corrected.
Thursday timed practice
Stewart again set the pace, but his afternoon included a frightening escape when the rear wing mounting failed at the fast kink. He caught the slide and returned safely to the pits. Fittipaldi recovered from brake trouble to become his closest challenger, while Hailwood missed the session with gearbox problems.
Friday final qualifying
Hailwood immediately reproduced the speed he had shown in morning testing, before Stewart matched his Wednesday pole time late in the official session. Regazzoni and Fittipaldi joined him on the front row, with remarkably little separating much of the field. Ferguson broke his only engine and withdrew, despite having also tried Love’s Surtees.

Saturday warm-up
Saturday morning brought a late scare for McLaren when Hulme’s engine developed an oil leak. The team completed repairs shortly before the start. Pace’s fuel-pump problem then left him starting from the pit lane, three laps behind, while Hill also needed last-minute ignition attention.
What happened in the 1972 South African Grand Prix?
Hulme made the best start, but Stewart soon swept ahead. Hailwood emerged as a serious threat after passing Fittipaldi, only for a rear-suspension failure to end his charge. Stewart then lost gearbox lubrication and retired, leaving Fittipaldi leading Hulme.
The Lotus became increasingly difficult to handle as its fuel load fell. Hulme closed in and passed through traffic, while Revson worked forward after a poor opening lap. Amon’s promising run unravelled with a severe vibration, and Andretti overtook Peterson for fourth late on.
Hulme won by just over 14 seconds, ending McLaren’s championship victory drought dating back to 1969. Fittipaldi held second ahead of Revson, with Andretti, Peterson and Hill completing the points. The result carried Hulme into the championship lead.
After the race, Denny Hulme headed the drivers’ standings with 15 points, followed by Jackie Stewart on 9. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 15, with Tyrrell – Ford on 9.
