Born in Rantoul, Illinois, Branson built his career the hard way — wheel-to-wheel in sprint cars and championship machines during one of the most dangerous eras in motorsport. Competing in the USAC Championship Car series from 1956 through 1966, he made 128 starts and became a familiar face at the Indianapolis 500, qualifying for the iconic race every year from 1959 to 1966.

Consistency was one of Branson’s trademarks. Across his championship car career, he recorded 85 top-ten finishes and captured seven victories, proving he could battle with the very best drivers of his generation on tracks large and small.

While he found success in championship cars, Branson was especially celebrated in sprint car racing, where his fearless style and relentless pace made him a standout competitor. He claimed the USAC Sprint Car Series Championship twice — first in 1959 and again in 1964 — cementing his place among the elite dirt-track racers of the era.

Death

Branson’s career was tragically cut short in 1966 following a crash during a sprint car race at Ascot Park in Gardena, California. The accident also claimed the life of fellow driver Dick Atkins and happened with only a handful of races remaining in the USAC season.

Even decades later, Branson’s impact on American open-wheel racing continues to be recognised. He was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1994 and later honoured by the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2012.
