Born on 4 July 1938, Ernest Pieterse was one of South Africa’s early pioneers on the international motor racing stage. Best known for his appearances in Formula One, Pieterse competed in three FIA Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, making his debut on 29 December 1962.
Racing during an era when Formula One was still finding its global identity, Pieterse represented South Africa as one of a small group of drivers breaking into the sport from outside Europe’s traditional racing heartlands. While he did not score World Championship points during his three Grand Prix starts, his participation at the highest level of motorsport secured his place in Formula One history.
