Championship background

The 1965 F1 World Championship began with a fresh points table and the first opportunity to measure the teams in race conditions. Prince George Circuit hosted the opening contest, where qualifying pace, tyre management and reliability would all shape the result.

Race entries

The calendar change brought the opening round forward before new-season machinery was ready, so the leading teams largely relied on their established cars. Stewart joined Hill at BRM, Rindt partnered McLaren at Cooper, and the European field was supplemented by local entrants competing for limited grid places.

Preliminary selection practice

Local hopefuls had to lap below the prescribed 1:37 threshold before joining official practice. Charlton, Pretorius and Puzey failed to advance. This preliminary running did not decide grid positions: the remaining contenders still had to compete for four places alongside the sixteen invited starters.

Wednesday timed practice

Heat and wind complicated the opening session, but Clark became the first driver to average more than 100 mph around the circuit. Hill compared tyres before an engine failure curtailed his programme. Cooper worked on suspension and gearing, while Spence spun repeatedly at the hairpin. The smaller teams also faced reliability problems as they tried to establish competitive times.

Thursday morning timed practice

Cooler conditions allowed Clark to lower his best time again. Hill returned with a replacement engine and revised gearbox, while Stewart lost running to a misfire caused by water reaching the plug leads. Hawkins stopped after debris entered a valve, and Gurney required an engine change. Brabham improved strongly despite the busy circuit.

Thursday afternoon final qualifying

Strong winds made the last session difficult and discouraged sustained running. Both BRM drivers improved, but Clark remained fastest and retained pole. Gurney returned with his replacement engine, while Spence made only brief checks. The final selection left several local drivers outside the twenty-car field.

Qualifying Classification

Three official timed sessions followed the preliminary selection. The fastest eligible lap set grid position; the earlier local-driver screening did not count towards the grid.

What happened in the 1965 South African Grand Prix?

Clark made a clean start and quickly established control, with Spence initially giving Lotus a strong presence at the front. The leader’s pace proved beyond the opposition, allowing him to build a comfortable advantage.

Spence’s challenge faded after a spin on oil, while Brabham lost a promising result to late ignition trouble. Surtees and Hill emerged as Clark’s nearest finishers, but neither could put the Lotus under sustained pressure.

The chequered flag was shown early, and Clark completed an additional lap to remove any doubt about the distance. Surtees finished second, Hill third and Spence fourth, with McLaren and debutant Stewart taking the remaining points.

After the race, Jim Clark headed the drivers’ standings with 9 points, followed by John Surtees on 6. Lotus – Climax led the constructors’ table on 9, with Ferrari on 6.
