Sam Tingle

Sam Ashworth Tingle (24 August 1921 – 19 December 2008) was an English-born racing driver who represented Rhodesia—now Zimbabwe—during his motorsport career. Best known for his appearances in Formula One during the 1960s, Tingle remains one of only a handful of drivers from Rhodesia to compete in the Formula One World Championship.

Early Life

Tingle was born on 24 August 1921 in Manchester, England, before later moving to Rhodesia, where he established himself as one of the country’s leading racing drivers competing across a variety of disciplines.

Formula One Career

Tingle made his Formula One World Championship debut on 28 December at the 1963 South African Grand Prix, becoming one of the very few Rhodesian drivers to compete at the highest level of single-seater racing.

Alongside fellow Rhodesian John Love, Tingle was one of only two drivers from the country to successfully start a Formula One World Championship race. Another Rhodesian hopeful, Clive Puzey, attempted to qualify for Formula One but was unable to secure a place on the starting grid.

Although his Formula One career was relatively short, Tingle’s achievements helped put Rhodesian motorsport on the international map during an era when opportunities for drivers from Southern Africa were limited.

Later Life

Following his racing career, Tingle remained closely associated with the sport. He spent his later years in South Africa and died in Somerset West on 19 December 2008 at the age of 87.
