Championship background

Denny Hulme arrived at round 11 leading the 1967 F1 World Championship on 47 points, with Jack Brabham on 42. Brabham – Repco headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 61 points.

Hulme entered the finale ahead of Brabham in the title race. The championship counted only a limited number of results from each part of the season, so raw points totals did not tell the whole story. Hulme’s podium finish ultimately secured the crown.

Race entries

Rodriguez returned to Cooper for his home race after injury, while Rindt’s entry was withdrawn following a dispute over starting money. Jonathan Williams joined Amon at Ferrari. Solana again drove the third Lotus, and Beltoise continued with the smaller-engined Matra.

Friday timed practice

Altitude and heat created mixture and cooling problems as practice began. Clark and Hulme traded quick laps, with Clark ending fastest. Brabham and Spence suffered engine failures, while Amon needed a gearbox change. Williams lost his first opportunity to run because Ferrari’s preparation and Amon’s repairs occupied both cars.

Saturday final qualifying

Cooler conditions encouraged faster laps, and Clark secured pole after switching chassis. Amon challenged late, while Hill and Gurney could not match the leading Lotus. Williams damaged his nose against a marker tyre, and Rodriguez found that pain in his recovering leg made clutch operation difficult. Teams again waited for the cooler final part of the session to make their strongest attempts.

Qualifying Classification

Clark took pole ahead of Amon and Gurney. The best individual lap from Friday or Saturday determined the grid.

What happened in the 1967 Mexican Grand Prix?

Clark controlled the race despite losing normal clutch operation. Brabham pursued him but could not close the gap, while Hulme concentrated on the finish he needed to settle the championship.

The Lotus reached the flag more than a minute ahead of Brabham. Hulme’s third place secured the title, making him the first New Zealand driver to become World Champion. Surtees finished fourth, with Mike Spence and Pedro Rodriguez completing the points.

Clark had won four races during the season, but Hulme’s more consistent scoring carried the greater reward. The final standings apply the dropped-results rule: Hulme finished with 51 retained points and Brabham with 46.

After the race, Denny Hulme headed the drivers’ standings with 51 points, followed by Jack Brabham on 46. Brabham – Repco led the constructors’ table on 63, with Lotus – Ford on 44.
