Championship background

Denny Hulme arrived at round 10 leading the 1967 F1 World Championship on 43 points, with Jack Brabham on 40. Brabham – Repco headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 57 points.

Race entries

Lotus added Moises Solana, while Ickx remained alongside Rindt at Cooper. Beltoise brought a smaller-engined Matra with additional fuel capacity and ballast. Honda arrived with its Monza-winning car, and Gurney continued with a single Eagle after the team’s Italian engine failures.

Friday timed practice

Mist and rain restricted the early running before conditions improved. Clark and Hill eventually set the pace, while Brabham suffered an engine failure and Cooper encountered both a water leak and another broken engine. Surtees’s Honda misfired, and Solana did not get a run because Clark used the third Lotus for comparison.

Saturday final qualifying

Hill beat Clark with a late pole lap while his team-mate tested with full tanks. Gurney’s engine tightened after a scavenge-pump failure, and McLaren struggled with a differential that allowed damaging engine overspeed. BRM compared unusually wide tyres before Stewart returned to the conventional setup. Solana impressed with limited running in the third Lotus.

Qualifying Classification

Hill took pole ahead of Clark, with the fastest individual lap across the two sessions counting. The clearer Saturday conditions allowed almost universal improvement.

What happened in the 1967 United States Grand Prix?

Hill led the opening stages, with Clark and Gurney close behind. Gurney retired with suspension trouble, and Amon emerged as the strongest challenger to Lotus. Hill’s clutch and gear-selection problems allowed Clark through and repeatedly gave Amon opportunities before the Ferrari retired with oil-related engine trouble.

Clark then suffered a rear-suspension support failure with only a few laps remaining. He slowed dramatically to protect the car, allowing Hill to close, but reached the finish six seconds ahead of his team-mate.

Hulme finished third despite running short of fuel, followed by Siffert, Brabham and Bonnier. Lotus had finally converted its speed into a one-two, while the drivers’ title remained a contest between the two Brabham team-mates.

After the race, Denny Hulme headed the drivers’ standings with 47 points, followed by Jack Brabham on 42. Brabham – Repco led the constructors’ table on 61, with Lotus – Ford on 35.
