Championship background
Denny Hulme arrived at round 6 leading the 1967 F1 World Championship on 22 points, with Jack Brabham on 16. Brabham – Repco headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 27 points.
Race entries
Cooper added Alan Rees and prepared a new car for Rindt, while Silvio Moser entered a Cooper–ATS. McLaren again drove an Eagle alongside Gurney. BRM shuffled drivers between its H16 and V8 cars during practice, ultimately leaving Courage without a race car. Lotus strengthened its transmissions after the failures in France.
Thursday morning timed practice
Brabham and Hulme set a strong pace while Lotus wrestled with engine misfires. Clark remained competitive despite the problem, but the team could do little chassis development. McLaren needed differential modifications, Surtees’s Honda ran unevenly, and Rindt waited for his new Cooper. Brabham’s session ended with a fuel-pump failure.
Thursday afternoon timed practice
Clark narrowly beat Brabham’s morning time even though the Lotus still misfired. Spence suffered a front-suspension failure after swapping BRMs with Stewart. McLaren completed only a late lap after repairs, while Rindt used an older Cooper because the new car was still unfinished. Amon’s Ferrari ran consistently but lacked the leading pace.
Friday final qualifying
An overnight fuel-injection fix transformed the Lotus engines, allowing Clark to claim pole. Hill went second but crashed when a rear suspension mounting failed on the pit approach. Stewart’s newer BRM also suffered a suspension collapse, triggering further car exchanges. Lotus took Hill’s wreck back to the factory and assembled a replacement overnight.
Qualifying Classification
Clark and Hill retained the fastest two times despite Hill’s accident. Courage did not start because the BRM car changes left him without an available chassis.

Friday afternoon untimed practice
A short untimed session allowed final checks after the grid had been decided. McLaren’s Eagle then broke a connecting rod, adding an overnight engine change to the team’s workload. Lotus was already occupied with its much larger task of providing Hill with a race-ready car.
What happened in the 1967 British Grand Prix?
Clark led initially, but Hill settled into his rebuilt car and eventually moved ahead. Lotus controlled the race until Hill stopped with a loose rear-suspension fixing. He rejoined after repairs, only for an engine failure to end his afternoon.
Clark resumed the lead and brought the Lotus home ahead of Hulme. Behind them, Brabham resisted Amon for much of the race, but the Ferrari driver finally passed at Woodcote near the finish.
Amon took third, Brabham fourth and Rodriguez fifth, with Surtees sixth. Clark’s second win of the season rewarded the mechanics’ efforts, while Hulme’s consistent scoring kept him at the head of the championship.
After the race, Denny Hulme headed the drivers’ standings with 28 points, followed by Jim Clark on 19. Brabham – Repco led the constructors’ table on 33, with Lotus – Ford on 19.
