Irwin emerged during an era packed with fearless talent and quickly earned a reputation for his speed, precision and smooth driving style. His performances across junior categories and sports car racing brought him to Formula One, where he made his World Championship debut on 16 July 1966. Between 1966 and 1967, he competed in ten Formula One Grands Prix, scoring two World Championship points and establishing himself as a driver many believed had a major future ahead of him.

But motorsport in the 1960s could be brutally unforgiving.

Irwin’s racing career came to an abrupt and devastating end during practice for the 1968 Nürburgring 1000km endurance race. Driving the notoriously unpredictable Ford P68 sports prototype, he lost control at the fearsome Flugplatz section of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. After becoming airborne over the jump, the car landed tail-first before violently flipping end over end in one of the era’s most frightening accidents.

He survived, but suffered severe head injuries that ultimately prevented him from ever racing competitively again.

Although Irwin eventually recovered physically, the crash left a lasting impact. Over the decades, he largely withdrew from public life, choosing to stay away from the spotlight and from most motorsport events. As a result, he became something of an enigmatic figure among racing fans — remembered vividly by those who saw him race, but rarely seen in public.

In 2006, reports emerged that Irwin had unexpectedly reconnected with one of his old racing rivals after a chance meeting in London. It was also revealed that he still occasionally experienced flashbacks linked to his Nürburgring accident, although he was said to be in generally good health.

Fans were delighted when Irwin made a rare public appearance at Thruxton Circuit’s 40th anniversary celebrations in April 2008. The event marked one of the few opportunities in recent years to see him reunited with fellow competitors from the golden age of British motorsport. A substantial interview and contemporary photograph of Irwin alongside several of his 1960s rivals — and a Formula 2 car from the period — later appeared in the June 2008 edition of Motor Sport magazine.

Today, Chris Irwin is believed to be living a quiet life in rural Rutland, far removed from the noise and danger of the racetracks where he once looked destined for greatness. Though his Formula One statistics only tell part of the story, those who followed the sport during the 1960s still regard him as one of the great “what might have been” talents of his generation.
