Championship background
Denny Hulme arrived at round 5 leading the 1967 F1 World Championship on 16 points, with Pedro Rodríguez on 11. Brabham – Repco headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 18 points.
Race entries
Ferrari fielded Amon alone, with Parkes injured and Scarfiotti absent. Honda withdrew, while McLaren drove a second Eagle. Brabham and Hulme both had the latest chassis and Repco engines. The French Grand Prix’s move to the short Bugatti layout at Le Mans prompted criticism from drivers accustomed to the country’s faster road circuits.
Friday timed practice
Heat and repeated acceleration from slow corners strained cooling and fuel systems. Lotus missed the day after its transporter was delayed at customs, allowing Brabham’s drivers to establish the pace. Irwin went faster in the lighter V8 BRM than the works H16 cars, while McLaren cautiously learnt the Eagle.
Saturday final qualifying
Lotus arrived but both Cosworth engines misfired, frustrating setup work. Hill’s problem cleared late enough for him to claim pole, while Clark remained fourth with an engine that never ran cleanly. BRM exchanged cars between Stewart and Irwin, yet the younger driver again compared favourably. Brabham and Gurney completed the front row.
Qualifying Classification
The grid used the fastest lap from the two practice days. Hill secured pole despite Lotus missing the first session and suffering fuel-system trouble on Saturday.

What happened in the 1967 French Grand Prix?
Hill led away before Brabham moved ahead. Clark then took the lead and Hill followed him past the Brabham, briefly establishing a Lotus one-two. Their advantage disappeared when both cars suffered final-drive failures.
Brabham inherited the lead, while Gurney’s fuel-line failure and Amon’s throttle-cable trouble removed further challengers. Hulme moved into second to complete a strong afternoon for the team.
Brabham won by almost fifty seconds, with Hulme second and Stewart third. Siffert, Irwin and Rodriguez completed the points. Reliability had again proved decisive, and Hulme retained his lead in the championship.
After the race, Denny Hulme headed the drivers’ standings with 22 points, followed by Jack Brabham on 16. Brabham – Repco led the constructors’ table on 27, with Cooper – Maserati on 17.
