Denny Hulme led another Brabham one-two at the Nürburgring after Dan Gurney lost the lead through a late driveshaft failure. Chris Amon finished third, while Jacky Ickx’s performance in a Formula Two Matra was one of the weekend’s outstanding stories.

Championship background
Denny Hulme arrived at round 7 leading the 1967 F1 World Championship on 28 points, with Jim Clark on 19. Brabham – Repco headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 33 points.
Race entries
Formula Two cars joined the Grand Prix in a concurrent contest, with their own grid behind the Formula One field. Ickx, Oliver, Schlesser and other rising drivers took part, while Hahne’s two-litre BMW-powered Lola ran as a Formula One entry. The circuit had gained a slower section near the pits, adding a new challenge to the familiar Nordschleife.
Friday morning timed practice
Many teams spent time on the short pit loop before attempting full laps. Ickx immediately embarrassed several Formula One cars with his pace, while Hulme and Surtees eventually moved ahead. Clark struggled to obtain the correct brake temperatures, and Hill completed no full timed lap while adjusting his car. McLaren was delayed by fuel-metering trouble.
Friday afternoon timed practice
Ickx again set a demanding benchmark before Hulme narrowly beat it. Hill’s gearbox seized, forcing Lotus to prepare its spare car, while Brabham escaped a frightening suspension failure. Surtees and Spence also suffered transmission-related problems. Lotus compared brake arrangements as it tried to make Clark’s car work properly over the circuit’s varied demands.
Saturday final qualifying
Hill crashed the spare Lotus but escaped injury, then completed a careful lap in Clark’s car to satisfy the minimum-distance requirement. Clark finally produced two rapid laps to take pole by a substantial margin. Rindt’s engine failure left him short of the required five laps, but officials later waived the requirement and restored him to the grid.
Qualifying Classification
Ickx was third fastest overall, but Formula Two cars started behind the Formula One grid and were ineligible for championship points. Rindt received permission to start despite completing fewer than the required practice laps.

Sunday pit-loop warm-up
Before the start, competitors were allowed a brief warm-up around the short pit loop. Mechanics had worked extensively overnight after practice accidents and failures, and Brabham’s damaged car was ready again. This was preparation on the short loop, not another full qualifying session.
What happened in the 1967 German Grand Prix?
Clark led initially before suspension trouble put him out. Gurney passed Hulme and built a strong position, while Ickx climbed through the larger-engined cars. Stewart retired with transmission trouble, and Ickx’s impressive run later ended with a suspension failure.
Gurney’s driveshaft joint broke near the finish, handing the lead to Hulme. The championship leader secured his second victory of the season, with Brabham completing another team one-two and Amon taking third.
Surtees finished fourth, while Oliver won the Formula Two contest and placed fifth overall. Bonnier and Ligier received the remaining World Championship points as the next eligible Formula One finishers. The result strengthened Hulme’s title challenge.
After the race, Denny Hulme headed the drivers’ standings with 37 points, followed by Jack Brabham on 25. Brabham – Repco led the constructors’ table on 42, with Cooper – Maserati on 21.
