Championship background
The engine limit had doubled from 1.5 litres to three litres for naturally aspirated cars, with 1.5-litre supercharged engines also permitted. Many teams were still developing their new machinery, so enlarged older engines remained competitive on Monaco’s tight streets.
Race entries
McLaren made its championship debut as a constructor with Bruce McLaren driving the new Ford-powered car. Brabham used a Repco V8, Ferrari brought three-litre V12 machinery alongside Bandini’s smaller V6, and Cooper used Maserati engines. BRM demonstrated its H16 but retained the lighter V8 cars for the race; Clark also relied on a smaller-engined Lotus.
Thursday timed practice
Stewart quickly established the pace as the roads dried after a light shower. McLaren began developing his new car, while Hill gave the complex BRM H16 an exploratory run. Clark lost time to final-drive trouble. Ferrari and Brabham missed the session because of travel delays, leaving several major contenders still to appear.
Friday morning timed practice
The full works field arrived, and Surtees showed that Ferrari’s three-litre car could compete around the slow circuit. Bandini and the two BRM drivers also ran strongly. Clark, his Lotus repaired, produced a late fastest lap, while Hulme impressed in the four-cylinder Brabham. McLaren continued making steady progress with the new chassis.
Saturday final qualifying
Clark broke the ninety-second barrier to secure pole, narrowly ahead of Surtees. Bandini tried Ferrari’s new V12 as well as the V6 but chose the smaller car for the race. Brabham’s Repco engine developed trouble, and BRM kept its H16 in the pits while Hill concentrated on grid position. Bondurant joined the running in a privately entered BRM.
Qualifying Classification
The fastest eligible lap across three timed practice sessions set the grid. Film-camera running for Grand Prix was separate from the sporting contest and is not treated as an additional championship entry.

What happened in the 1966 Monaco Grand Prix?
Surtees led the opening stages before his Ferrari’s differential failed, handing control to Stewart. Hulme also retired, while Clark’s recovery ended through suspension trouble as he disputed a podium place.
Bandini pushed hard and set the fastest lap, but eased his pace to preserve the Ferrari’s brakes. Stewart remained in command and took his second World Championship victory, with Bandini second and Hill third.
Bondurant finished fourth and was the only other classified driver. The requirement to complete at least ninety percent of the winner’s distance excluded other cars still circulating, so fifth- and sixth-place points were not awarded. The older, smaller-engined BRMs had prevailed in the first race of the new formula.
After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 9 points, followed by Lorenzo Bandini on 6. BRM led the constructors’ table on 9, with Ferrari on 6.
