Championship background

Jack Brabham arrived at round 5 leading the 1966 F1 World Championship on 21 points, with Jochen Rindt on 11. Brabham – Repco headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 21 points.

Race entries

Ferrari returned with Bandini and Parkes, while Lotus and BRM continued relying on their interim two-litre cars. Gurney retained the Climax-powered Eagle and McLaren the Serenissima engine. The short gap after the British race left teams little preparation time, but Brabham arrived with its successful Repco-powered pair intact.

Friday morning timed practice

Rain limited grip and discouraged some running, but Clark produced a strong time in the two-litre Lotus. Surtees was close behind in the Cooper, and Spence also went well. The conditions allowed the lighter interim cars to remain competitive while teams established their initial settings.

Friday afternoon timed practice

The circuit dried and Brabham and Hulme raised the pace. Clark matched Hulme despite his power disadvantage, while Gurney extracted impressive speed from the Eagle. Surtees concentrated on development work rather than a single quick lap. Ferrari’s drivers improved but could not match the leading group.

Saturday final qualifying

Bandini crashed on oil and slightly injured his hand. Brabham improved again to secure pole, but Hulme’s engine failed spectacularly, leaving oil and debris to be cleared. Both works Coopers also suffered engine failures, and McLaren’s broken Serenissima engine forced his withdrawal. Several teams faced major overnight repairs.

Qualifying Classification

The fastest lap across three timed sessions counted. Filming sessions were separate from official qualifying. Brabham took pole ahead of Hulme and Clark.

Sunday morning checks

Rindt ran in a replacement engine, and Hulme used the available morning running to test his rebuilt car. The Brabham’s reverse-gear mechanism then jammed and damaged the gearbox casing, prompting another urgent repair before the start. These checks followed the conclusion of qualifying.

What happened in the 1966 Dutch Grand Prix?

Brabham led initially, but Clark challenged strongly and eventually moved ahead. The Lotus driver began to pull away, demonstrating how much he could extract from the smaller engine around Zandvoort.

A water-pump problem forced Clark to stop and cost him two laps. Brabham regained control and went on to lap the field, while Hill secured second in the BRM.

Clark recovered third ahead of Stewart, Spence and Bandini. Brabham’s third successive win extended his championship advantage, while another opportunity had slipped away from Lotus through mechanical trouble.

After the race, Jack Brabham headed the drivers’ standings with 30 points, followed by Graham Hill on 14. Brabham – Repco led the constructors’ table on 30, with Ferrari on 22.
