Championship background

Jackie Stewart arrived at round 11 leading the 1969 F1 World Championship on 60 points, with Jacky Ickx on 31. Matra – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 63 points.

Race entries

Lotus did not replace the injured Graham Hill in a conventional car, leaving Rindt to lead its challenge. John Miles returned in the four-wheel-drive Lotus, while Rodriguez carried the home crowd’s hopes in the North American Racing Team’s Ferrari. BRM retained Eaton alongside Surtees and Oliver.

Friday timed practice

Brabham produced the decisive lap late in the cooler Friday session, recording 1:42.9. The circuit’s higher kerbs and concrete ribs discouraged the corner-cutting seen previously, making clean positioning more important. Ickx backed up his team-mate’s pace, while the high altitude placed particular demands on engine preparation.

Saturday final qualifying

Warmer conditions prevented the leading contenders from improving their Friday times. Ickx headed the day’s running, and Rindt recovered from a tiring opening session to go second quickest on Saturday. That improvement still left the Lotus sixth overall. Brabham retained pole alongside Ickx, ahead of Stewart and Hulme.

Qualifying Classification

The fastest lap from either timed session counted. Friday’s cooler conditions proved decisive for the leading grid positions.

Pre-race warm-up lap

For the second consecutive Grand Prix, Bruce McLaren’s car failed before the start. His retirement on the warm-up lap left Hulme to carry the team’s hopes in the race.

What happened in the 1969 Mexican Grand Prix?

Stewart led initially, but Ickx moved ahead and Hulme quickly joined the fight. Hulme passed the Brabham on lap ten and controlled the pace from there, responding when Ickx drew closer. Brabham settled into third despite an engine that was not running cleanly.

A collision between Siffert and Courage disrupted their races, while Rindt retired with damaged suspension after running fifth. Miles and Eaton also went out early. Oliver persevered with his BRM as other contenders encountered trouble.

Hulme won by 2.56 seconds from Ickx, with Brabham completing the podium. Stewart and Beltoise finished fourth and fifth, and Oliver collected his only championship point of the season in sixth. The result gave McLaren a satisfying finale as Stewart closed his title-winning year.

After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 63 points, followed by Jacky Ickx on 37. Matra – Ford led the constructors’ table on 66, with Brabham – Ford on 49.
