Championship background

The season began with increasingly elaborate wings and several important driver changes. New fire-extinguisher and rollover-protection requirements also influenced the cars arriving in South Africa. Brabham had switched from Repco to Cosworth power, while Tyrrell brought both familiar and new Matras to assess.

Race entries

Rindt moved to Lotus alongside champion Hill, with Andretti adding a third works entry. Ickx joined Brabham, Surtees and Oliver formed BRM’s works pairing, and Ferrari ultimately entered only Amon. Stewart and Beltoise drove Tyrrell’s Cosworth-powered Matras, while Love, Van Rooyen, De Klerk and Tingle represented the local contingent.

Wednesday timed practice

Hulme set the early pace as several rivals struggled to get running. Ferrari had not arrived, Siffert’s Lotus was still being prepared and BRM discovered an electrical-earthing fault affecting its older engines. Surtees also damaged the new four-valve engine’s metering drive. Stewart was quick in his familiar Matra but completed only limited laps in the new MS80. McLaren’s day ended with a water-pump failure.

Thursday timed practice

Brabham timed his final run perfectly, setting a 1:20.0 that would secure pole. Amon lost time to a failed fuel pump before bringing Ferrari into contention. Lotus suffered alarming rear-wing collapses on both Rindt and Andretti’s cars, forcing urgent redesign work. Stewart continued struggling with the new Matra’s misfire, while Siffert’s mechanics spent the session chasing a fuel-pressure problem.

Friday final qualifying

A thunderstorm arrived after half an hour and protected Brabham’s Thursday time. The revised Lotus wings appeared during the downpour, but Rindt later suffered an engine failure. Stewart abandoned the troublesome MS80 in favour of his older car. Tingle finally joined practice after a lengthy rebuild, and conditions remained difficult even as the track began drying.

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Friday additional untimed running

Officials allowed another half-hour after timing stopped. Sand washed onto the circuit kept the surface slippery despite the improving weather. Ferrari developed a water-pipe leak whose repair required major dismantling, and Surtees stopped with damage inside the new BRM engine. Both teams faced substantial work before Saturday’s race.

Saturday unofficial practice

Rindt’s replacement engine was not running cleanly, while Love again lost an ignition unit and Van Rooyen needed an electrical misfire cured. Surtees had switched to an older BRM but missed the previous evening’s chassis-declaration deadline, sending him to the back of the grid. Ferrari’s lengthy overnight repair was completed in time.

What happened in the 1969 South African Grand Prix?

Brabham reached the first corner ahead, but Stewart swept past before the next turn and immediately began building a lead. Brabham’s challenge unravelled when his rear wing broke, forcing a stop and eventually retirement as the wingless car became increasingly difficult to control.

Amon and Rindt were also removed by mechanical problems, leaving Hill and Hulme to lead the pursuit. Stewart remained untroubled in the older Matra, vindicating the decision to set aside the new car. The threatening storms stayed away from the circuit during the race.

Stewart won ahead of Hill and Hulme, with Siffert, McLaren and Beltoise completing the points. It was an emphatic start to his title campaign and a weekend that exposed both the performance and the fragility of the increasingly ambitious wing designs.

After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 9 points, followed by Graham Hill on 6. Matra – Ford led the constructors’ table on 9, with Lotus – Ford on 6.
