Championship background

Jackie Stewart arrived at round 9 leading the 1969 F1 World Championship on 60 points, with Bruce McLaren on 24. Matra – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 60 points.

Race entries

Matra added Johnny Servoz-Gavin in the four-wheel-drive MS84. Local interest included Bill Brack in a BRM, John Cordts in a Brabham-Climax and Al Pease in an Eagle-Climax, while Pete Lovely brought his privately owned Lotus. Pedro Rodriguez again drove the Ferrari entered by the North American Racing Team.

Thursday morning untimed practice

Sand and loose dirt made the circuit slippery as the teams settled in. McLaren’s engine seized, requiring a rapid replacement, and Stewart’s gearbox repeatedly jumped out of gear. Rindt tried the rebuilt four-wheel-drive Lotus and had a major spin near the pits. With no official timing, this was a preparation session rather than a contest for grid positions.

Thursday afternoon untimed practice

The surface improved as running cleared away the loose material. McLaren returned with a replacement engine, and unofficial pit timing showed the pace increasing sharply. Rindt, Beltoise and Siffert were among the drivers finding speed, while Stewart’s gearbox difficulties continued to interrupt his work.

Friday morning timed practice

Beltoise immediately showed his liking for Mosport, matching Stewart and Rindt at the front before sliding into a retaining fence. His Matra escaped serious damage. Siffert’s accident was much more costly: a heavy impact badly damaged the left-hand suspension of his Lotus. Brabham also tried Ickx’s car as the team worked towards the decisive afternoon session.

Friday final qualifying

Ickx delivered a 1:17.4 early in the afternoon and nobody could match it. Beltoise’s morning time secured second, with Rindt and Stewart sharing the same recorded time behind him. Stewart’s engine went off song, prompting a run in the four-wheel-drive Matra, while Rindt also returned to the experimental Lotus. Miles’s pace in that Lotus offered encouragement even though the conventional cars still headed the grid.

Qualifying Classification

Only Friday’s timed sessions determined the grid; Thursday’s running was untimed. The Grand Prix took place on Saturday.

What happened in the 1969 Canadian Grand Prix?

Rindt led away, but Stewart and Ickx soon became the central contenders. Their fight ended in contact while disputing the lead, putting Stewart out and leaving Ickx in control. Brabham followed his team-mate home to complete a strong result for the team.

Pease was disqualified after his slow running caused repeated problems for faster traffic. His withdrawal made this an unusual final championship appearance for Climax-powered cars; Cordts had already retired from his debut.

Rindt finished third, ahead of Beltoise and McLaren. Servoz-Gavin took sixth in the Matra MS84, scoring a championship point in a four-wheel-drive car. Ickx’s second victory of the season strengthened his position behind Stewart in the championship.

After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 60 points, followed by Jacky Ickx on 31. Matra – Ford led the constructors’ table on 63, with Brabham – Ford on 39.
