Championship background
Jackie Stewart arrived at round 5 leading the 1969 F1 World Championship on 27 points, with Graham Hill on 15. Matra – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 27 points.
Race entries
BRM withdrew while reorganising its operation, and Brabham was absent after breaking an ankle in a testing accident. Ferrari again entered only Amon. Miles made his championship debut in the four-wheel-drive Lotus 63, while Matra brought its own experimental MS84 alongside the two conventional race cars. Only thirteen drivers took part.
Friday timed practice
Stewart immediately established the pace in the MS80, comfortably improving on the circuit’s old 1.5-litre-era record. Matra could then consider its experimental car without sacrificing its conventional programme. Miles faced a much steeper learning curve, adapting to Formula One power, four-wheel drive and Charade’s demanding sequence of bends at the same time.
Saturday first timed practice
Stewart evaluated the four-wheel-drive Matra and recorded a competitive 3:06.6, demonstrating useful progress without displacing the MS80 as his race choice. The long, twisting lap placed a premium on confidence and consistency. Rindt was troubled by sickness and dizziness during the meeting, limiting the challenge he could offer in the conventional Lotus.
Saturday final qualifying
Hulme, Rindt and Beltoise challenged Stewart’s earlier benchmark, prompting the Scot to respond with a 3:00.6 pole lap. Hulme qualified second, followed by Rindt, Ickx and Beltoise, whose times were closely matched. Ferrari’s preparations were compromised when Amon damaged his newer car during practice, leaving him to race the older chassis.

What happened in the 1969 French Grand Prix?
Stewart led from the start and steadily escaped. Hulme initially held second, but a loose front anti-roll bar forced a lengthy repair stop. Rindt eventually withdrew when his dizziness became severe, while Miles’s four-wheel-drive debut lasted only a lap before a fuel-pump drive failure.
Beltoise advanced from seventh on the opening lap to challenge Ickx for second. Their contest continued to the final lap, when the Frenchman passed the Brabham and crossed the line just ahead. The battle provided a dramatic finish behind Stewart’s controlled performance.
Matra celebrated a one-two on home soil, with Ickx third. McLaren resisted Elford for fourth, and Hill took the final point. Amon retired with engine trouble but remained classified, while Stewart had combined pole, fastest lap and a victory led throughout.
After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 36 points, followed by Graham Hill on 16. Matra – Ford led the constructors’ table on 36, with Lotus – Ford on 22.
