Jackie Stewart made it two victories from two starts at Montjuïc, finishing two laps clear of Bruce McLaren. The result came after frightening wing failures eliminated both works Lotuses and an engine failure denied Chris Amon a long-awaited championship victory.

Championship background

Jackie Stewart arrived at round 2 leading the 1969 F1 World Championship on 9 points, with Graham Hill on 6. Matra – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 9 points.

Race entries

Montjuïc hosted its first World Championship Grand Prix, taking over from Jarama. Tyrrell brought two MS80s for Stewart and Beltoise, while Courage appeared in Frank Williams’s Brabham. Ferrari again relied on Amon, and the small field reflected the limited entries and a clash with the Targa Florio.

Thursday timed practice

Amon immediately showed Ferrari’s potential, setting a benchmark well inside the circuit’s previous Formula Two record. Hill also found speed, but Stewart struggled with poor engine response. Ickx stopped after only half a lap with a fuel-pressure valve problem, and Rindt damaged his Lotus’s suspension after striking a stray dog. Courage’s car had yet to arrive, while BRM worked through gear-selection trouble.

Friday timed practice

Hill matched Amon’s time, but Rindt remained unhappy with his Lotus’s handling and had its dampers checked. Stewart still lacked clean engine response, and Brabham clipped the barriers, interrupting his running. BRM’s gradual improvement offered encouragement after its difficult opening session, while Courage could finally begin work with the late-arriving Brabham.

Saturday final qualifying

Every driver improved as Ferrari and Lotus fought for pole. Amon used a fresh engine to lower the target, only for Rindt to answer with a decisive 1:25.7. Hill took third ahead of Stewart, who tried Beltoise’s Matra before retaining his own chassis with another engine. Surtees lost valuable time changing gear ratios, and several teams fitted extra fuel capacity for the demanding race.

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

What happened in the 1969 Spanish Grand Prix?

Pre-start problems delayed the race, with Oliver’s BRM leaking oil and Courage needing a push after starter trouble. Rindt led away and established an advantage over Amon. Hill then crashed when his rear-wing support failed; Rindt later suffered a similar failure at the same part of the circuit and hit the wreckage. Both survived, although Rindt was injured.

Amon inherited a substantial lead and seemed poised for victory until his Ferrari’s engine failed. Stewart took over despite nursing an imperfectly running Matra. Ickx briefly held second, but a broken wing required a stop and subsequent suspension trouble ended his race.

Stewart finished two laps ahead of McLaren, with Beltoise third, Hulme fourth and Surtees fifth. The victory strengthened Stewart’s championship lead, but the weekend’s defining issue was the danger of the high suspension-mounted wings. Their future would be confronted at the next round in Monaco.

After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 18 points, followed by Bruce McLaren on 8. Matra – Ford led the constructors’ table on 18, with McLaren – Ford on 10.
