Championship background

Jackie Stewart arrived at round 7 leading the 1969 F1 World Championship on 45 points, with Bruce McLaren on 17. Matra – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 45 points.

Race entries

Formula Two cars joined the meeting in a separate class and were not eligible for World Championship points. Ferrari stayed away, Jack Brabham was still recovering from his ankle injury, and Mario Andretti took over Lotus’s four-wheel-drive car. BMW withdrew its remaining Formula Two entries after Mitter’s fatal accident; Hans Herrmann also withdrew.

Friday morning timed practice

Stewart quickly broke the eight-minute barrier, with Rindt his closest challenger. Andretti’s first Nürburgring outing was interrupted almost immediately by a broken camshaft. Hulme had ignition trouble, while Siffert’s late arrival left him without a complete timed lap. On such a long circuit, losing a single run meant giving away valuable preparation.

Friday afternoon timed practice

Ickx moved ahead with a rapid 7:44.2, while Siffert joined Stewart, Rindt and McLaren below eight minutes. The competitive picture became secondary when Mitter crashed fatally in his Formula Two BMW. Elsewhere, Oliver struggled with the BRM’s fuel system and Andretti waited for a replacement engine.

Saturday final qualifying

Ickx improved to 7:42.1, edging Stewart by three tenths for pole. Siffert suffered a suspension failure and needed an engine change, while Surtees’s troubled BRM failed to complete a flying lap. Andretti made striking progress as he learnt the circuit, only for another camshaft failure to end his running and force Lotus to install a third engine.

Qualifying Classification

The Formula Two runners formed their own group behind the Formula One cars on the starting grid. Their presence in the overall results did not make them eligible for championship points.

What happened in the 1969 German Grand Prix?

Stewart escaped at the start, but Ickx recovered from a poor getaway and rapidly worked back into contention. The Belgian repeatedly challenged before finally passing under braking for the South Turn. Stewart kept him in sight until gearbox trouble reduced his ability to respond.

Andretti crashed on the opening lap and Elford became involved, suffering a broken arm. Later, Siffert lost a likely podium finish when his front suspension failed again. Hulme retired with gearbox trouble and Rindt stopped after his engine lost power.

Ickx completed a commanding victory ahead of Stewart, McLaren and Hill. Pescarolo won the Formula Two contest and finished fifth overall. Siffert and Beltoise, although no longer running, occupied the remaining points positions among the eligible Formula One cars.

After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 51 points, followed by Jacky Ickx on 22. Matra – Ford led the constructors’ table on 51, with Lotus – Ford on 28.
