All times are local. The race time is the scheduled start; weather delays and interruptions are described below.

Championship background

Jack Brabham arrived at round 7 leading the 1960 F1 World Championship on 24 points, with Bruce McLaren on 24. Cooper – Climax headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 38 points.

Race entries

Surtees returned to Lotus, while Brooks rejoined Yeoman Credit. Aston Martin entered Salvadori and Trintignant. With the Scarabs sent home for development, Reventlow and Daigh tried a works-entered Cooper, the faster driver to take the race seat.

Thursday timed practice

Only an hour was available, and rain curtailed useful running. Brabham and McLaren were quick to establish times before the weather worsened, with Graham Hill also showing strong pace. Aston Martin had only Salvadori’s car ready, fitted with experimental independent rear suspension. Late starters had little opportunity to recover the lost time.

Friday final qualifying

Dry weather allowed a more representative contest during the ninety-minute session. Brabham secured pole, while Hill remained a serious threat. Surtees struggled with a misfire eventually traced to chafed ignition leads. Daigh proved substantially quicker than Reventlow in the borrowed Cooper and was selected to race. Ferrari remained some way off the leading pace.

Qualifying Classification

Two timed sessions preceded Saturday’s Grand Prix. Daigh took the shared Cooper entry after the practice comparison, while the late-arriving Gino Munaron was permitted to start at the back without a practice time.

What happened in the 1960 British Grand Prix?

Hill stalled at the start but recovered brilliantly, passing car after car until he caught Brabham and took the lead. Behind them, Surtees drove a measured race as Lotus challenged the works Coopers.

Brabham stayed close, keeping Hill under pressure as they negotiated slower traffic. With his brakes requiring attention and only a few laps remaining, Hill spun at Copse and retired. Clark had already lost ground with suspension trouble.

Brabham won ahead of Surtees and Ireland. McLaren, Brooks and von Trips completed the points. Hill’s recovery had been the outstanding drive of the afternoon, but the reigning champion collected another victory.

After the race, Jack Brabham headed the drivers’ standings with 32 points, followed by Bruce McLaren on 27. Cooper – Climax led the constructors’ table on 46, with Lotus – Climax on 25.
