Championship background

Jack Brabham arrived at round 9 leading the 1960 F1 World Championship on 40 points, with Bruce McLaren on 33. Cooper – Climax headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 48 points.

Race entries

Ferrari entered three front-engined Formula One cars for Hill, Ginther and Mairesse, plus a rear-engined Formula Two car for von Trips. Porsche and several private Formula Two entries supplemented the field, alongside Cooper-based specials and older machinery. Cooper, Lotus and BRM’s principal teams stayed away.

Friday timed practice

Ferrari’s Formula One cars immediately held the advantage, while slipstream assistance helped von Trips’s smaller-engined car challenge the Porsches. The combined circuit demanded a compromise between road-course handling and sustained banking loads. Centro Sud and Naylor did not run on the first day, reducing an already unusual field’s activity.

Saturday final qualifying

Centro Sud and Naylor joined the running, and Cabianca’s Cooper-Castellotti emerged as the strongest challenger behind the three leading Ferraris. Hill secured pole. Gould could not start his Maserati and withdrew. Ferrari’s preparations were briefly interrupted when Enzo Ferrari was removed from the pit area for lacking the required pass.

Qualifying Classification

Two practice days set the grid on the full combined circuit. Formula One and Formula Two cars shared the race, with their differing eligibility retained in the results and championship calculations.

What happened in the 1960 Italian Grand Prix?

Ginther led the early stages before Phil Hill moved ahead. With the main British opposition absent, the Ferraris controlled the race and occupied the first three places at the finish.

Cabianca brought his Cooper-Castellotti home fourth. Von Trips finished fifth in the smaller-engined Ferrari ahead of Hans Herrmann’s Porsche, winning the contest among the leading Formula Two cars.

Hill’s victory was the final World Championship Grand Prix win for a front-engined Formula One car. Ginther and Mairesse completed Ferrari’s podium sweep, providing a home success at the end of a difficult season.

After the race, Jack Brabham headed the drivers’ standings with 40 points, followed by Bruce McLaren on 33. Cooper – Climax led the constructors’ table on 48, with Lotus – Climax on 28.
