Championship background
Bruce McLaren arrived at round 2 leading the 1960 F1 World Championship on 8 points, with Cliff Allison on 6. Cooper – Climax headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 8 points.
Race entries
Moss switched to Rob Walker’s new Lotus, while Ferrari brought a rear-engined car for Richie Ginther. John Surtees joined the works Lotus line-up. Lance Reventlow and Chuck Daigh arrived with the American Scarabs, and Cooper introduced its revised works cars.
Thursday practice — times cancelled
The opening session descended into timing confusion as increasingly implausible laps appeared. A fault in the official clock was discovered and the session’s times were annulled. Bonnier and Stacey had mechanical trouble, while Ginther struggled to select gears in the new Ferrari; none could use the afternoon to secure a valid grid time.
Friday timed practice
Moss established the decisive pace, but the session also brought serious setbacks. Allison crashed at the chicane and was injured, von Trips suffered chassis trouble, and Burgess damaged his engine. Moss briefly tried a Scarab to help assess its problems, while the unfamiliar American cars remained well off the leading pace.
Saturday final qualifying
Moss’s Friday lap remained unbeaten as the battle for the final places intensified. The Scarabs improved after suspension and tyre changes but still missed out. Ginther looked increasingly comfortable in the rear-engined Ferrari. Ireland and Trintignant displaced Halford from the qualifying sixteen late in the session.
Qualifying Classification
Only sixteen cars could start. Thursday’s times were cancelled because of the timing fault, so the grid came from Friday and Saturday. Equal times were ordered by which driver had recorded the lap first.

What happened in the 1960 Monaco Grand Prix?
Bonnier led initially before Moss moved ahead. Rain then transformed the race: Brabham took the lead but crashed at Sainte Devote, handing the advantage back to the Lotus.
A loose plug lead briefly delayed Moss and allowed Bonnier back in front. Moss recovered, while BRM’s challenge unravelled through suspension trouble and Graham Hill’s accident. McLaren and Phil Hill fought closely behind.
Moss won ahead of McLaren and Phil Hill, with Brooks fourth. The remaining points went to Bonnier and Ginther despite their late mechanical problems, reflecting the event’s classification. Lotus had achieved its first championship victory through the private Walker team.
After the race, Bruce McLaren headed the drivers’ standings with 14 points, followed by Stirling Moss on 8. Cooper – Climax led the constructors’ table on 14, with Ferrari on 10.
