Championship background
Bruce McLaren arrived at round 4 leading the 1960 F1 World Championship on 14 points, with Stirling Moss on 8. Cooper – Climax headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 14 points.
Race entries
Jim Clark replaced John Surtees at Lotus while Surtees returned to motorcycle racing. Aston Martin brought its revised car, Henry Taylor joined Yeoman Credit, and Carel Godin de Beaufort entered a Formula Two Cooper. The teams had little time to repair their cars after Monaco.
Friday unofficial practice
Clark’s Lotus broke a gearbox pinion during the preliminary running. Aston Martin assessed its new fuel-injected car against the older spare, finding clean acceleration but less reassuring stability. McLaren also worked on the handling of the revised Cooper. This session was separate from official qualifying.
Saturday morning timed practice
Moss immediately set a demanding pace. Ferrari’s new rear anti-roll bars changed the handling more than its drivers wanted, while Taylor first tried a smaller-engined Cooper before moving to the Formula One car. Bonnier broke his gearbox. The proposed three-lap qualifying calculation made the admission battle difficult to follow.
Saturday afternoon timed practice
After objections from entrants, the organisers replaced the aggregate rule with each driver’s fastest lap and increased the possible field. Moss remained fastest, with Brabham closing in. Bonnier missed the session while his gearbox was repaired. Scarab improved but Aston Martin still struggled to match the competition.
Sunday final qualifying
Brabham briefly raised the challenge before Moss responded to take pole. Taylor went off on a slowing-down lap but escaped without injury or serious damage. Ferrari tried its rear-engined car again, and disputed timing figures added to arguments over starting money. Scarab and Aston Martin ultimately withdrew.
Qualifying Classification
The proposed sum of three laps was abandoned during the meeting. Best individual laps set the grid, while limited starting money prompted withdrawals. Seventeen cars started, including de Beaufort’s Formula Two entry.

What happened in the 1960 Dutch Grand Prix?
Brabham and Moss fought hard at the front until a loose paving stone, dislodged by the Cooper, damaged the Lotus’s front wheel. Moss stopped for repairs and began a determined recovery through the field.
Gurney crashed after a brake failure, killing a spectator who was in a prohibited area. The race continued, with Brabham pulling clear and Ireland emerging as his closest challenger.
Brabham won from Ireland and Graham Hill. Moss recovered to fourth ahead of von Trips and Ginther. His charge demonstrated the pace he had lost through the unscheduled stop, but the day belonged to the reigning champion.
After the race, Bruce McLaren headed the drivers’ standings with 14 points, followed by Stirling Moss on 11. Cooper – Climax led the constructors’ table on 22, with Lotus – Climax on 15.
