Championship background

Jim Clark arrived at round 6 leading the 1965 F1 World Championship on 36 points, with Graham Hill on 23. Lotus – Climax headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 36 points.

Race entries

Hulme again raced alongside Gurney, with Brabham stepping aside. Honda entered Ginther alone after extensive testing at the circuit. Ferrari retained Surtees in the flat-twelve and Bandini in a V8, while Lotus brought both older and newer Climax engine specifications. Seventeen drivers were invited to race.

Friday morning timed practice

Fresh tarmac work delayed the start by half an hour. Ginther immediately showed the benefit of Honda’s circuit experience, although Clark ultimately went faster. Ireland spun into the dunes, prompting confused signalling before he resumed. Anderson was mistakenly shown the black flag while running in his rebuilt engine. Cold conditions and threatening rain limited the session’s rhythm.

Friday afternoon timed practice

Heavy rain prevented improvements to the morning’s times. BRM nevertheless used the running to compare tyre combinations, with Hill setting the wet-weather pace. Most drivers circulated much more slowly, gathering experience of the slippery surface rather than contesting their eventual grid positions.

Saturday final qualifying

Sunshine returned, but a slippery surface made improvements difficult. Hill took pole, while Clark’s newer engine lost oil and remained unconvincing after repairs. Lotus chose the older engine for the race. Ginther and Surtees matched Clark’s Friday time, and Bandini switched to the spare Ferrari after engine trouble. Spins also interrupted Ginther and Rindt.

Qualifying Classification

Three timed sessions established grid order for the invited field. Friday afternoon’s rain meant the dry sessions supplied the decisive times.

What happened in the 1965 Dutch Grand Prix?

Ginther launched the Honda into the lead, before Hill and then Clark moved ahead. Clark took control early and began to stretch the field, while Stewart fought his way into position as the principal challenger.

Hill lost ground with rev-counter trouble, and Stewart battled Gurney before settling into second. The BRM driver maintained a strong pace but could not prevent Clark from adding another victory.

Gurney completed the podium, followed by Hill, Hulme and Ginther. Clark’s fifth win of the season further tightened his grip on the title, while Honda again demonstrated speed that had yet to become a sustained winning challenge.

After the race, Jim Clark headed the drivers’ standings with 45 points, followed by Graham Hill on 26. Lotus – Climax led the constructors’ table on 45, with BRM on 37.
