Championship background

Jim Clark arrived at round 5 leading the 1965 F1 World Championship on 27 points, with Graham Hill on 17. Lotus – Climax headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 27 points.

Race entries

Ferrari gave Surtees the flat-twelve car, while Brabham entered Gurney, Hulme and Brabham himself. Honda concentrated on Ginther, and several British independent drivers joined the established field. Lotus and Brabham awaited repaired examples of the newer Climax engine during the meeting.

Thursday morning timed practice

Surtees compared Ferrari’s engines and initially set a strong pace, but Clark and the BRM drivers soon improved on it. Clark was exceptionally quick with the older Climax unit. Cooper tried an alternative gearbox, while the expanded independent field worked towards the event’s qualifying requirement. Hawkins was absent after an earlier testing accident.

Thursday afternoon timed practice

The threat of Friday rain prompted a determined late push. Hill and Clark traded fast laps, with Hill eventually edging ahead in the closing moments. Ginther brought Honda into contention near the front, while Stewart’s pace raised the qualifying target for the slower entrants. Surtees also remained competitive while comparing his available cars.

Friday final qualifying

The rain held off, allowing further improvements. Clark used the newly available 32-valve engine to take pole. Ginther again impressed, matching the best times of Stewart and Surtees. Bandini’s engine failed and he switched cars, while Rindt benefited from a slipstream behind the Ferrari. The two-and-a-half-hour session settled the grid for Saturday’s race.

Qualifying Classification

The best lap across three sessions counted. The event required entrants to come within five seconds of the third-fastest time, although Rhodes received permission to start outside that threshold.

Pre-race preparations

Gurney’s newly installed engine failed on the warm-up lap. Brabham handed over his own car and withdrew, allowing Gurney to start without time even to change its number. Clark also tested final adjustments before the race.

What happened in the 1965 British Grand Prix?

Ginther briefly led from the start before Clark moved ahead on the opening lap. Hill became the main challenger as Honda’s early promise faded with a loss of power. Surtees fought off pressure from Spence for third.

Clark initially built a comfortable lead, but his engine developed a misfire and then lost oil pressure through the corners. He reduced the load on it by coasting where necessary, while Hill began closing rapidly despite earlier brake trouble.

The gap fell dramatically, yet Clark judged the final laps well enough to win by 3.2 seconds. Hill set the fastest lap in pursuit, with Surtees third ahead of Spence, Stewart and Gurney. Clark had preserved victory through careful management as much as outright speed.

After the race, Jim Clark headed the drivers’ standings with 36 points, followed by Graham Hill on 23. Lotus – Climax led the constructors’ table on 36, with BRM on 31.
