Championship background

Jim Clark arrived at round 4 leading the 1965 F1 World Championship on 18 points, with Graham Hill on 15. BRM headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 19 points.

Race entries

Hulme took Brabham’s seat for this event, benefiting from previous experience of the circuit, while Gurney received the newer Climax engine. Parnell entered Ireland and Amon, with Hailwood unavailable and Attwood recovering from his Spa accident. Anderson joined the field in place of Gardner.

Friday timed practice

Heat and an unfamiliar circuit made the opening session demanding. Hulme used his previous experience to set the pace, narrowly ahead of Stewart and Surtees. Clark suffered a rear-suspension failure, while Hill crashed after a throttle problem and jarred his neck. Ireland broke a gearbox, and several stranded drivers relied on lifts from fellow competitors to return to the pits.

Saturday final qualifying

Low cloud threatened to leave Friday’s order intact before conditions improved. Stewart and Gurney raised the pace, but Clark’s newer engine failed. He then took the spare Lotus and immediately went faster, securing pole. Hill remained uncomfortable after his accident, and Spence damaged his suspension in a slide. BRM discovered that a larger nose opening helped cooling.

Qualifying Classification

The best lap from the two timed sessions determined the grid. Clark qualified and raced the older spare Lotus after failures on both practice days.

Pre-race preparations

The cars completed a reconnaissance lap after the morning’s rain cleared. Lotus had repaired Spence’s car, while Gurney changed to an older engine. BRM attended to Stewart’s throttles and Hill’s clutch before the start.

What happened in the 1965 French Grand Prix?

Clark led away and quickly built a gap while Bandini initially held second. Stewart passed the Ferrari, followed by Gurney and Surtees, but Clark had already established a useful advantage on the twisting circuit.

The Lotus driver controlled the race despite relying on older machinery. Gurney’s challenge was disrupted by trouble, leaving Stewart as the closest pursuer. Surtees kept Ferrari in the leading group while others struggled with handling and reliability.

Clark completed a clean sweep of pole, victory, fastest lap and every lap led. Stewart finished second and Surtees third, followed by Hulme, Hill and Siffert. The result further underlined Clark’s authority over the championship.

After the race, Jim Clark headed the drivers’ standings with 27 points, followed by Graham Hill on 17. Lotus – Climax led the constructors’ table on 27, with BRM on 25.
