Christensen was an American racing car constructor best known for building front-engined Indianapolis roadsters during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Although the company never competed in a conventional Formula One Grand Prix, its cars were classified as Formula One entrants because the Indianapolis 500 formed part of the FIA World Championship of Drivers from 1950 to 1960.
As a result, Christensen chassis participated in the 1959 and 1960 Indianapolis 500, giving the constructor two appearances in the Formula One World Championship.

Background
Christensen specialised in the construction of Indianapolis racing cars during the era when the Indianapolis 500 was dominated by lightweight front-engined roadsters. Designed specifically for oval-track competition, Christensen chassis were built to the technical regulations of the United States Auto Club (USAC) rather than the Formula One regulations used elsewhere in the World Championship.
Although Indianapolis cars differed significantly from contemporary European Formula One machinery in terms of chassis design, engine configuration, and race format, their inclusion in the World Championship meant that constructors and drivers automatically became part of Formula One’s official historical record.
Formula One appearances
Christensen made its World Championship debut at the 1959 Indianapolis 500, entering a chassis for the famous American oval race. The following year, the constructor returned for the 1960 Indianapolis 500, marking its second and final appearance in a World Championship event before the Indianapolis 500 was removed from the Formula One calendar after 1960.
Like many specialist Indianapolis constructors of the period, Christensen was unable to challenge the established front-runners during its Formula One appearances and did not score World Championship points.
Continued success at Indianapolis
Although Christensen’s Formula One history ended with the removal of the Indianapolis 500 from the World Championship, the constructor remained active in American open-wheel racing for several more seasons.
Christensen cars continued to compete in the Indianapolis 500 through 1963, when the team achieved its strongest result. Driving a Christensen chassis, Bob Christie finished 13th in the 1963 Indianapolis 500, the highest placing ever achieved by one of the constructor’s cars at the event.
By the mid-1960s, however, the rapid transition from traditional front-engined roadsters to rear-engined designs—led by the success of the Lotus Indianapolis programme—rendered older chassis increasingly uncompetitive. Like many American constructors that specialised in roadsters, Christensen gradually disappeared from top-level competition as rear-engined cars became the new standard.
Legacy
Although Christensen’s Formula One record consisted of only two World Championship appearances and no points finishes, the constructor formed part of the unique period in Formula One history when the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the World Championship.
Today, Christensen is remembered as one of the many specialist Indianapolis constructors whose cars contributed to the rich history of the Indianapolis 500 and whose brief World Championship appearances remain part of Formula One’s official records.
