Charles George Daigh was an American racing driver, engineer, and sports car star whose career bridged the workshop and the cockpit. Best known for his association with Scarab, Daigh became one of the leading U.S. road racers of the late 1950s before carrying American hopes into Formula One. Though he never scored World Championship points, he was a key figure in one of the most ambitious attempts to challenge Europe with an all-American Grand Prix effort.

Born in Long Beach on 29 November 1923, Daigh grew up during the rise of Southern California’s car culture. Like many racers of his generation, he combined mechanical skill with driving talent, becoming as comfortable with engineering solutions as he was with high-speed competition. That dual ability would define his career.
Racing career
Scarab and Formula One
Daigh’s path into top-level racing came through the wealthy enthusiast and racer Lance Reventlow, founder of the Scarab project. Initially valued as one of the team’s resident engineers, Daigh soon proved equally capable behind the wheel. His technical understanding made him an ideal development driver as Scarab sought to build world-class American racing cars.
In 1960, Daigh entered Formula One with Scarab, competing in six World Championship Grand Prix and making his debut at the Indianapolis 500 on 29 May 1960, then still part of the championship. He also contested one non-championship Formula One race.
The Scarab Formula One project was bold but badly timed. While Europe had moved decisively toward rear-engined cars, Scarab arrived with a beautifully engineered but outdated front-engined design. Despite Daigh’s commitment and skill, the cars struggled to keep pace with the new generation. He scored no championship points, but his efforts remain an important chapter in American Formula One history.
International Formula campaign
Following the 1960 season, Daigh continued racing in Europe in the International Formula series using the previous year’s front-engined Scarab. He finished eighth at Goodwood Circuit in the Lavant Cup and seventh in the prestigious International Trophy. He later crashed out of the British Empire Trophy at Silverstone Circuit.
Sports car success
If Formula One brought challenge, sports car racing brought triumph. Daigh was one of America’s finest road racers of the late 1950s and scored major victories in powerful sports cars.
His greatest win came at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1959, one of the world’s premier long-distance contests. Victory at Sebring elevated him into the front rank of endurance drivers and confirmed that American teams and talent could compete internationally.
He also won the 1958 United States Sports Car Grand Prix at Riverside International Raceway driving a Scarab. The event is widely credited with helping launch professional sports car racing in the United States, making Daigh’s triumph historically significant beyond the trophy itself.
Daigh also twice attempted to qualify for the Indianapolis 500, though he did not make the starting field.
Death
Daigh died on 29 April 2008 in Newport Beach after a brief battle with heart and respiratory problems. He was 84 years old.
