Dempsey Cothrien Wilson was an American racing driver whose career reflected the rugged, multi-disciplinary spirit of mid-century U.S. motorsport. Built on short-track toughness and mechanical know-how, Wilson rose from the Southern California racing scene to compete in the prestigious USAC Championship Car ranks, including multiple starts at the Indianapolis 500.

Wilson was born in Los Angeles, a city that in the post-war years became one of the busiest hubs of American motorsport culture.
He began racing on the Southern California short tracks, learning his craft in the hard-edged world of local competition where drivers developed racecraft quickly—or disappeared just as fast.
He first raced roadsters before moving on to midgets and stock cars, demonstrating the kind of versatility common among drivers of the period. In those days, many racers competed in multiple categories simply to stay sharp, stay employed, and stay on track.
Wilson embraced that lifestyle fully.
USAC Championship Car career
Wilson reached the national stage in the United States Automobile Club Championship Car series, America’s top level of open-wheel racing and a direct ancestor of modern IndyCar competition.
He competed across the 1956, 1958–1965, and 1968–1969 seasons, making 32 starts in total.
Against some of the strongest fields in American racing, Wilson recorded four top-ten finishes, proving he could compete with the established names of the era.
His best result came in 1960 at Milwaukee, where he finished an excellent 8th place.
While others may have had more glamorous records, Wilson’s results reflected a driver who consistently maximised his opportunities in highly competitive machinery.
Indianapolis 500
Wilson also reached the biggest race in American motorsport, the Indianapolis 500.
He competed in the event in 1958, 1960, 1961, and 1963. To qualify for Indianapolis during that era was an achievement in itself. The Speedway grid was fiercely contested, with deep talent pools and little margin for error.
Wilson’s appearances placed him among the select group of drivers trusted to race at one of the world’s most intimidating and prestigious venues.
Business life and engineering roots
Like many racers of his generation, Wilson was more than just a driver.
Outside the cockpit, he owned Dempsey Wilson Racing Cams, a business specialising in refurbishing camshafts. It was a natural fit for a man from the old-school American racing scene, where drivers were often mechanics, engineers, fabricators, and businessmen all at once.
That hands-on technical background likely played a major role in sustaining his long career.
Death
Wilson died on 23rd April 1971, in Duarte, at City of Hope, after a long battle with mesothelioma. He was 44 years old.
