Halford competed in Formula One between 1956 and 1960, during a time when many drivers entered races using their own cars rather than being contracted to factory teams.

He entered 9 World Championship Grand Prix and also raced extensively in non-Championship Formula One events, which were common in that era. Typically racing as an independent private entrant, rather than for major works teams

This placed him among a distinctive group of drivers who funded and managed their own racing efforts—something largely absent from modern Formula One.

Later life and death

Halford later lived in Churston Ferrers, where he died on 2 December 2001.

His obituary in The Daily Telegraph described him as: “one of the last of the 1950s’ select band of private-entrant owner-drivers from the heyday of the classical front-engined Grand Prix car.”

He is remembered as part of a fading chapter in Formula One history—when independent drivers could still compete at the highest level. His career embodies the spirit of early Grand Prix racing: individual, mechanical, and fiercely independent.
