Seidel participated in 12 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, making his debut at the 1953 German Grand Prix. Although he never scored championship points, his Formula One career reflected the spirit of the sport’s pioneering years, when private entrants played a vital role in filling grids and keeping competition alive across Europe.

Away from Formula One, Seidel enjoyed success in sports car racing and endurance events. One of his most notable performances came in the 1955 Mille Miglia, where he and co-driver Helm Glöckler guided their Porsche 550 to an impressive eighth-place finish against some of the strongest competition of the era.

Much of Seidel’s racing activity was conducted under his own name or through the Scuderia Colonia banner, an operation that became a regular presence in international motorsport. Known for campaigning a variety of machinery, he embodied the independent racer-entrepreneur who combined driving talent with the challenges of running and financing a team.

His racing career was not without controversy. In 1962, Seidel was refused a start at the German Grand Prix after failing to meet the organisers’ qualifying requirements during practice. The decision led to a dispute with officials from the Automobilclub von Deutschland and intensified existing concerns about the preparation and competitiveness of his cars. The situation escalated when his competition licence was withdrawn, prompting him to put his Formula One cars up for sale.

Despite losing his licence, Seidel remained determined to challenge the ruling. Later that year, he entered the non-championship Mexican Grand Prix in an effort to prompt an FIA review of his case. However, the investigation ultimately failed to overturn the decision, effectively bringing his top-level racing activities to a close.

Wolfgang Seidel died of a heart attack on 1 March 1987 at the age of 60.
