1923

Onofre Marimon was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Competing in Formula 1 between 1951 and 1954, he tragically became the first driver to die during a World Championship race weekend (other than the Indianapolis 500). Marimon was killed in a practice session for the 1954 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. His Maserati veered off the track at the Breidscheid curve near the Adenauer Bridge as he pushed to improve his qualifying time. Tragically, he lost his life at the base of a steep and hazardous incline. He was just 30 years old.

1996

Minardi signed Japan’s Ukyo Katayama for the 1997 season. Katayama, 33, had spent three seasons with Tyrrell. Optimistic about the move, he stated, “I think that Minardi will be a big surprise for many in the course of the season.” However, the only surprise came when Katayama managed to finish a race, as Minardi endured yet another lacklustre season.

2005

Fernando Alonso announced his decision to join McLaren for the 2007 season. The reigning Renault world champion described the move as “a new beginning” and “a tremendous challenge.” Despite the early announcement, Renault and Alonso remained focused, securing both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships in 2006.

2008

The FIA faced embarrassment when it was revealed that Ferrari had an agreement entitling them to US$80 million more than any other team for winning the Constructors’ Championship. The deal struck in 2003, came during a period when Ferrari was rumoured to be considering a breakaway series. Bernie Ecclestone admitted to the arrangement, stating, “We ‘bought’ Ferrari. We ‘bought’ Ferrari’s loyalty.” This admission followed sharp criticism from Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo.

2008

Sam Tingle passed away in Cape Town, South Africa. A competitor in five South African Grands Prix between 1963 and 1969, Tingle was one of only two drivers from the former Rhodesia to participate in an F1 race alongside John Love. A third Rhodesian racer, Clive Puzey, failed to qualify in his Formula One attempt. He died in Somerset West, South Africa, aged 87.
