Championship background
Jim Clark arrived at round 10 leading the 1963 F1 World Championship on 54 points, with Richie Ginther on 29. Lotus – Climax headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 54 points.
Race entries
The major teams sent two drivers each, joined by local entrants. Ferrari brought Surtees and Bandini, while de Beaufort gained a late entry in his Porsche. Every starter had to satisfy the organisers’ qualifying standard.
Thursday timed practice
Surtees was fastest despite handling difficulties. Both Lotus drivers encountered gear-selection trouble, and Hill’s engine required replacement. Teams also worked on cooling and gearing in the heat.
Friday morning timed practice
Clark took pole with a strong run before another selector fault stopped him. Brabham and Gurney were close behind. De Beaufort met the qualifying threshold, while Prophet lost running to a damaged valve.
Friday afternoon final qualifying
Wind and heat limited improvements. Prophet qualified, but Driver crashed after a steering failure and could not race. Clark’s gearbox finally worked satisfactorily; McLaren needed transmission repairs, and Ferrari remained unhappy with low-speed response.
Qualifying Classification
Three timed sessions preceded Saturday’s race. The required qualifying lap was 1:37.
